So I've got a classic case of a JohnRude. When I bought the motor with Evinrude 85 decals on the cowl I assumed that's what I was getting...
The plate on the transom bracket has the serial number 85899c. However the plug on the power head reads 115ml78c. The motor has power tilt and trim.
It is my understanding that these motors are equipped with 10 amp stators if they are also equipped with power tilt and trim. If they are manual tilt they have 6 amp stators.
My rectifier recently fried and needs replacement, and I've read a couple threads about upgrading to a water cooled regulator/rectifier. Namely this one

It is meant for a 10 amp stator, so my question is how do I find out which stator I have on this motor?
I had an overheating problem and I think it is what melted the potting a bit and fried my rectifier. I could be way off on that, but all my connections are very clean and tight. Not sure what else could cause this? My tach works only about 5% of the time and the charging system only works when the tach does. So I thought I 'd replace the rectifier with an upgraded water cooled one.
