I just bought a 1978 55hp Johnson, going to put it on my boat this weekend, but I've noticed that it doesn't have the typical clamping system that my other motor has to lock it to the transom. It can still rest on the top of the transom and there is a small lip to keep it from sliding off. It doesn't look like anything has broke off. Is this right or am I missing parts? Does it just bolt on?

Thanks.

from the exploded view on the brp website, it looks like it is NOT the style that takes 2 seperate brackets on the sides... alot of johnnyrudes do, including mine.

how many places are there for bolts? should be at least 4.

From what I can remember, there are quite a few holes for bolts to go through. Is there any way of locking this motor to the boat to prevent theft?

there may be, but i dont know. but i would suggest using the longest bolts you can find with lock nuts.it would be a pain for you to get on, but equally as much for someone trying to take the bolts off.

my uncle, years ago, was having problems with his radio being stolen from his car. so he installed the radio using l brackets and something like 6 or 8 inch machine screws. he came out one morning to 1 screw out, and another about half way out. they must have gotten tired of it and left. never had another problem since!
