I've got a 78 Cobalt I just aquired with a Merc 260 5.7 V8 and I think an Alpha 1. Got her running today and all is well except the trim and tilt. Don't have a manual yet. The trim will work going down but will not go up. Tilt is a no function at all (separate system?). What type oil and where to fill? Checked the switches and they work. Any Thoughts

Re: 78 Mercruiser 260 trim and tilt problem

hello<br /> at the solinoids, jump the small blue wire to the large red positive. if it goes up test the trim limit switch and trim harness wiring. if it does not, jump the large blue wire to the large red wire. if it goes up test the solinoid for open circuits on the primary windings. if it does not odds are the motor will need to be dissasembled and cleaned/repaired.

Those units were famous for bad tilt, trim switchs really not the switchs the wire was no good, that sounds like your problem, if it is don't let any one kid you into changeing switchs and spicing wires, buy the kit and do it right the first time---Bob

Found the problem(s). Low and badly comtaminated fluid(water in system) in conjunction with a switch that worked intermittently. New switch and a systemm flush did the trick. On the tilt, thanks Thunderbird. You nailed it. Boy did I feel dumb!
