Re: '78 model 700 not idling right

finally. saturday night i was able to take the boat over to my boat-mech buddy's house. i am really glad i didn't try anything on my on my own after seeing all he did. don't let this discourage anyone looking for how-to info though, because i'm sure most people on here have a better working knowledge of these things than i do. it all looked like something i could do, but i think i probably would have missed something, forgot to clean a particular jet, venturi, etc, or something along those lines.

we found old gas gunk blocking several of the small holes, cleaned them out with carb cleaner, and then blew them out with the air compressor. i now see the importance of using the little red tube on the carb cleaner can of which you guys have been impressing the necessity.

after re-assembly, we had to turn the idle screw up a bit more. it was set at 1 1/2 turns before and is now at 3 full turns. it runs quite well at this setting. i'll be putting the boat in the lake this thanksgiving weekend for a full test run, but it seems to be running better than i've seen it run since i picked it up a couple months ago.

Good stuff SUPERWOOTER ...... Ya ...the little red tube was the best thing invented for cleaning carbs ....... if it runs perrrrrrrrrfect now ...great.

Sometimes ...like when you got gung ...(thats worse than just fuel glaze) ...you got to run em and reclean them ...... if engine will idle real smooth without bucking at all and thru the RPM range ........I'd say you are there ...good luck ...let us know !

Re: '78 model 700 not idling right

update:
i had the opportunity to put the boat in concordia lake near vidalia, louisiana, over the thanksgiving holiday. it fired up on the first turn of the key and, after warmed, it idled beautifully. i have a MerControl remote control so it has nearly 90 degrees of movement just to engage the prop after which the throttle starts to increase. i tried moving slowing through the engagement section of the movement and the engine would bog and die every time. i finally decided to just drop the hammer from idle to see if that would work. it did! bow up and wind in my face. after running it a while i decided i had better figure out the best technique for taking off without having to "floor it". i figured out that as long as i quickly move the control through the engagement section, it would stay running at right near idle speed and i didn't actually have to slam it to WOT every time. as i stated in a previous post, i have the idle screw set at 3 turns out (1 1/2 turns out from factory).

my question is, do you guys think i might ought to try turning the idle screw out another half turn or so to try to prevent it from bogging and dieing when i slowly move through the engagement section, OR should i just leave it alone and go with what i've found works? the idle RPM are about 1100 as is.

also, WOT RPM are about 4800 to 4900 after i trim it up to level after it planes out. aside from changing the prop, do you guys know any tricks for squeezing out another hundred or two RPM?

thanks,

wooter

hey wooter ...don't no enough to advise you on this one without guessing, but looks like you got the carbs clean ....maybe you should start another thread with the specific problem ....dies when shifting from neutral to forward.
