79 115 Evinrude no power

Throttle wide open could not get more than 3000 r.p.m's. Would idle fine and slow speed's seem to run fine. Engine quit and would not restart. If I held in the button on throttle control it would start and run normal even at full throttle But die as soon as i released the button.What is this?? Checked all connections seemed to be ok.

What control box do you have? Is it a conventional side mount, or a conceal mount box. Is the box a 79 or earier?Can you explain the button you are referring to?

Yes it is a conventional side mount and it seems the button is a safety feature with a clip which my 5 yr old grand son found and removed without my knowing. I think the rpm problem was a bad connection in a wiring harness. Problem went away after disconnecting the connector and reinstalled. O the joy of buying a used old boat!!
