Went fishing and pulled boat up to land to do some rubber band line fishing. The water was pretty ugly had lot of silt etc. I had my motor tilted with prop in the water. Took off about 7 hours later and warning horn sounded with in 1 minute. Pulled back to shore did a visual and let it cool and then no warning horn at all. Drove it back at max tach and no problem. Spiting water out the hole real good.

What could have caused the horn to do that?

I would assume some crap got caught in the water intake. If all is good now you should be fine. See how hot it is running after a good run. Use your temp gauge, laser temp or jsut simply put your hands on the heads. Should be warm but not to hot to keep your hand on it.

If its been awhile since a water pump overhaul its good to change those every other season

I have a '97 150 Evinrude Ocean Pro and I've found that when my "Check Engine" light and alarm come on it's due to a dirty fuel filter thus starving the engine. It doesn't do it at idle only when I open up to get up on plane. I usually cruise around 3,000 rpm. I have one of those glass filters with replaceable elements. When this happens I check the glass and it's always dirty. I know I have dirt in the tank and need to have it cleaned out one of these days. Until then I carry extra filters and change it on the water. Only takes a couple minutes. It's just a hassle.

You may have had the motor at a high enough angle to pull air through the water intake. The motors are really not designed to operate at more than 15 degrees from the perpendicular.

When you have an overheat, it is good practice to replace the cylinder head gaskets. At a minimum, be sure to re-torque the cylinder head bolts.
