I have a 79 140 evinrude i am considering buying and was wondering about any problems I may need to look for. I am going to run a compression check for sure and I know it has a bad power pack. It has only been a freshwater motor and appears to be in really good shape on the outside, but I dont know about the inside. I hate to get stuck with a hunk of junk that looks good. I am pretty mechanical and can fix just about anything. I also hate to pass up on a good deal if it is one. I have done a search on this site and have found the members to be honest and helpful in their replies so I am open for any suggestions. by the way boat motor trailer and lots of new seats and stuff for $800.00. I didnt thaink that was too bad.

ur gonna check everything i would comp, lower unit (check for metal shavings or chunks on the magnetic plug) maybe you can make a deal with the guy to give your $$$ back if theres somthing bad wrong with the motor or at least give some of it back, Its a good motor Ive got a 77 140 that i worked out the same deal with the guy motor is strong good luck If you do get it I reccomend a decarb and Amsoil mixed with the gas thats what i run in mine and it has sure helped, overhaul the carbs and change the impellar and go get em...

Good luck man

At $800 for the boat, motor, and trailer I don't see how you could go wrong. My only concern is..... How do you know the power pack is bad? Symptoms? Buying something used is always a gamble. Getting a guarantee isn't likely to happen. If the compression check turns out ok, I'd highly recommend changing the water pump, thermostats, and most likely installing new carb kits just to be on the safe side of things. A good decarb would be VERY high on my list. These old crossflows are notorious for carbon build up. Might as well start out right. Better safe than sorry. Post back on the symptoms, which lead you to believe the power pack is bad, after you get it home. Assuming the compression test turns out OK. 100 or higher on the compression and within 10% of each other. It could very well be that the carbs are simply stopped up. Don't run it like that, as it WILL self destruct. Keep the carbs clean, the powerhead cool, and clear of carbon deposits via an annual decarb.

For that money it is probably worth the risk.

Somehow my last post didn't ........... ?

Since it has 2 power packs, check the spark. One bank or the other should have spark. Then switch the packs, and the spark should move to the other bank.New pack about $110.

Would you buy this boat for $800 if it had no engine ?
Then it is worth it to you,and that is what counts.

I am not suer the power pack is bad he says that one of the wires is burned. I havent seen it in person yet I am going tonight. I had planned on doing the carbs, impeller and lower unit lube regardless. The motor is worth more to me than the boat is, I have a underpowered bass boat right now. It only has a 70 rude on it now and I want more power. Thanks for all the suggestions.

Re: 79 140 evinrude

Well i checked the compression and all cylinders were within 2psi of 125psi. What he was calling the power pack was actually a coil where the plug wire comes out looks like it may have gotten aginst the cowling latch. It got dark on me so he is holding it for me until sat when I can spend more time looking it over. Any other suggestions?

Thanks,
Mike

Coils are cheap and easy to replace. Good used ones turn up on eBay all the time. They generally don't go bad unless they've been cooked (motor overheated) or banged by the cowling. It is usally fairly obvious if they do go bad, as they'll be melted or cracked...

Re: 79 140 evinrude

I've been following this thread a bit as I am slowly accumulating parts to build a 140 from the propshaft up. Thought I had pretty much everything, but yesterday discovered the scoring in the block was deeper than boring could take out. Found another, complete 140 which supposedly runs, but was described as tired. Hopefully the block is good in that one...
