I installed bushing in all my transom board holes... I did some in SS, but switched to plastic...because they are easier to drill out when everything doesn't quite line back up.... then I used liberal amounts of 5200... mostly dabbing it on the last inch of the bolt up near the head....no sense gobbing it on the threads!!

with your bracket you only need to worry about side intrusion...as you bolts are coming from a no water area anyway!! so I really good layer -bead of sealant around the perimeter of the hole pattern on the bracket...AND some sealant on the shank of the bolts should suffice...I used GOOF OFF remover to clean up the messy sealant all around my transom bolts...

For sealing things up, most of us here in a resto go through a construction tube or more of 5200. It's also a great adhesive that will help hold that pod on nice and tight.

I can't tell for sure but those bolts in the pod mounting holes look like they're 1/4" and the holes are 3/8". I do know you should toss that wing nut though.

my mok up wing nut? cant use it there, 7/16 to be exact.... gotta save that wing nut to hold my prop on. I got some 5200, just making sure I didn't miss anything, so I thought I'd ask the guys who have done it a before.

Hello Mnsota, A mystical woods filled with big V5 Starcrafts? I have visions of SS's, Islanders ,Mariners and Holidays all dancing through my head now!

Like you I have been trolling the depths of this forum for insights into my own restoration, a similar 22' V5 an 84 Mariner. I have a question for you. Did you find gaps for drainage under your ribs? I have no holes or gaps under most of mine and subsequently water just lies there(8 Gallons with the shop vac). I power washed and tried to get a hacksaw blade under them but they are to tight. Is your boat like this? Thanks Mike

I can get a flat steel ruler under mine..its about the size of a hack saw blade, maybe .020" thick.....doesn't take much debris to clog that.....that's one reason I have my boat set up on the trailer at such a steep angle.... so water drains mostly over the ribs...

Hey ford290, I was blown away when i saw them. I knew the guy had a few over the years but had no idea he was keeping to rebuld some day. there were three of them back there. all three were blocked up off the ground, not on trailers. my ribs do have a small amount of space under them, so the water does flow back. i would guess it was intended to be tight as some of mine have fair sized gaps and not all gaps the same. you can see in this pic if you zoom in. . you can see i have a few dents in the bottom. one deep one that in right under the short rib that goes between the ib engine mounts. i dont dare try and work it out for fear of a crack due to metal fatigue from trying to remove it. so instead i fabricated a doubler to go over the keel in that area to ensure the water is flowing a bit smoother back to the prop, and as a reinforcment in case it does take a hit again.

I made up a new block for my bow eye. the old one was cracked, maybe from age? anyway made the new one from 3 3/4 pieces of plywood epoxies together. still need to epoxy it. made it 4 inches longer and 1/2 inch thicker. should be much stronger and more bearing surface.

I wouldnt post my ph# on an open public forum.

I removed the for sale link you posted. In this rebuild topic isnt the place for it.

IF, and only if the SS you posted isnt your boat for sale, you can post the link to the ad here:

Thanks

Now back to our regular programming....

The V5 hulls were produced for only 3 years and 79 was the last one. The raised portion of rib to allow for drainage on most of the SC models and are called limber holes. I don't think the V5's and later SC models have them.

Pretty easy to see the difference, here's a pic of the limber holes on my Chief's rib, they're at least 1/8" bent raised area around 1.5" long..

Good idea with the bow eye backer replacement and that extended keel shield should do the job nicely! Looking super on the hull repairs :thumb:

Bob, i think you are asking about the cleco's. Great to have when working with rivets.
thats it, clecko fastners. great tool and cheap. made in all sizes that rivits are available. they will hold your pieces very tight while working. i used to be a aircraft mechanic and we used them extensively when working with sheet metal. cheapest place ive found them is aircraftspruce.com

I am pretty sure the first V5's came out in 1978...at least the 18 footer did...and they were made well into the 80s....I think the mid 80s or the late 80s they kept the general hull dimensions and just skipped the extra rakers........or at least the didn't go all the way up to the bow eye.....

if you click on any of my pics it should link you to all my pics of my boat, even the ones not in the tread. I live several hours from the cities so it may not work to see it in person. hope you find a boat. all the v5 boats I found before this one the owners were not willing to sell. if I find one for sale in will let you and everyone else know. there is this one down by you, dont know what exact model your looking for. http://stcloud.craigslist.org/boa/5337140512.html
