I have a 1979 40 hp Mercury motor. I am having trouble priming the motor. When I prime the fuel bulb it never prime up. The fuel starts to squirt out a brass fittting on th eside of the fuel bowl. I rebuilt the carburetor. Put it back on and it still did it. I removed the brass fitting with the hole in it and I am at a loss, if someone can help me end this agony I would really apreciate it. It is already a few months into my favorite time to fish and I haven't been able to get out htere yet. I just made a trde for this boat from a friend that was moving out of state. Please help. TIA

If you are just squeezing the bulb so hard it comes out the overflow with motor level, then don't squeeze so hard.

If the carbs are still flooding when you are trying to have it run, you still have carb issues that I'm not sure someone here can really explain without knowing exactly what that thing with the hole is.

You might need a mechanic friend, or to take it in.

Hi Capt.,
My first guess would be the float in the carb. is stuck down(hanging up) or open.Second would be a worn out needle valve and/or seat in the carb.Another idea, you may have a saturated float(fuel soaked). This is common with cork floats.Drop the fuel bowl again and make sure there is absolute free movement up/down.Did you replace the needle valve on rebuild? You should be able to adjust the float level if needed.
The brass fitting you mention may be the fuel bowl vent.
