Re: 79 80hp won't start?

ok, I replaced the old fuel line and bulb i can pump it 30-40 times and will not get hard. there is not any gas over flowing. I replaced the fuel lines in the cowlingfrom the fuel pump to the filter and from the filter to the carbs.

now as for the adjustments to the carbs should i screw them all the way in then back it out 2 turns or just start it 2 turns and go in till it starts? and do i turn the big adjustment screw or the small one or both? I do not know much about carburationadjustments.

thanks duff

Duff, one of the reasons I wanted you to remove the cover screws for the high speeds was to make sure there was fuel in both carbs and if there was to make room for more, if the carbs are full then the rest of the system is air locked and the bulb will not pump up.
Here is a picture of your carbs with the parts labeled to help, one more thing with the type of enrichment (primer) you have is if the engine is given anough trottle to open the butterflys it will render the enrichment system useless so don't give it much throttle at start up

so do you mean #2 or #15 when you say to remove the cover screws for the high speeds or #7 I will give this a try as soon as weather permits thaks duff

15 is the high speed cap which holds the high speed jet and drains the float bowl
7 is the low speed adustment needle
2 is the back drag jet for mid range, all it does is vent the float bowl

Re: 79 80hp won't start?

update to problem.....

I have it running but it looks like i am only getting fuel out of the bottom carb. when i opened the #15 on the carbs i was able to pump it up pretty hard. the problem is if i pump it enough to get fuel out of the top carb the lower carb is pouring out tremendous amounts of fuel from the bowl vent screw?

the other question i have is there are 2 square holes just under the cowling not inside just under looks like it is part of the exaust system. one side of it is spitting alot of water out of it.i have a pic that i will try to upload after i find my cable for my camera.

thanks a ton for your help so far.

Wouldn't hurt to change the impellar, piece of mind knowing it's ok might make it worth it.

Looks like a good stream to me.

I am not sure about the second pic, some else will be along.

the top pic is normal taletell, pee stream, the other is not right but, i don't know why. change the impeller, 5 years of being dry is too long.

Re: 79 80hp won't start?

so does anyone have an idea of where I can start looking to see what might be causing the water to come out of the hole on the second picture i had posted. does anyone know what whose squae holes are? that might be a staring point. sould i remove the cover and look at the pistons to see if there is a problem on there. any help on this would be great. if it is too much i will look at a newer used motor that might have problems and be back to square one.

thanks again
