Paid 100.00--told it wouldn't start--got it home & can not pull cord.
I'm not a mechanic but, that is seized up...right? Meaning something
big or major..... broken crank, rod.......???

Is it worth it to re-build.... Hard work if I do it myself.???

remove the 3 bolts that hole the recoil starter on. then see if rope will pull. then remove spark plugs, and try to turn flywheel by hand. report back. we have to figure out whats wrong first.

Thank You... Will do that this PM..

Yeah, it's locked-up. I can't turn fly wheel.

Your next job is to pull the LU and see if the powerhead or the gearcase is the problem.

Mine is a 1982 35 hp Johnson[just about same motor-] Once in a while it stalls when cold,in gear. When this happens, the electric start won't crank it -of course, but I also can't crank it with the rope either, First time this happened,I thought mine was froze up.
So I try to shift it to neutral to restart, and the shift lever pops back and forth between forward and reverse, and I try about 20 times to find neutral. When i finally manage to get it into neutral,it starts right up.
Don't mean to steal the thread, but am wondering if these problems are related??

Those motors have a neutral start switch and mechanism to prevent you from starting in gear and falling over the transom as boat accelerates. If flywheel is stuck, when you try to turn it by the startet teath, either lower unit or probably pistons are frozen. Too early to give up, though.

Allllllrighty then. I guess I'll try being a mechanic. I'm a smart man, but little experience. I'll get a book to start with but I may send you guys messages from time to time.
I also have a post in 'general' trying to ID an old aluminum boat. I'd like to restore it, but know nothing about it. "alum. boat ID" on 1-5 I think.
Any help on that would be great. Been trying for 6 months.

THANK ALL you guys.!!!!

Trust me, it's not that hard once you have a factory service manual. I knew nothing about working on outboards, came on here, bought a manual, and have since torn the motor completely down, with no problems at all. Working on rebuilding it, just need more cash to finish buying parts. I'm confident with the knowledge on this board and a good manual, you can do it fairly easy.
