79 johnson 35 hp HELP!! water / no water out the pee hole

79 johnson 35 hp this has been a total project i have replaced the impeller trying to get water pumping now when i try to start motor i have a great flow of water out of pee hole. but when motor starts no water at all out of pee hole. i do get a spray of water out of the two small exhaust ports can anybody give me any tips or info on if this is good or bad and how to fix any help would be greatly appriciated

You may have a critter in your pee hole
I would start by running a piece of weed eater line up in there and trying to break up any debris. On my 79 evinrude 35hp I had a small piece of bug shell that would block the indicator at high pressure. It flowed fine when cranking, but would quit when she started. After a couple times digging with the weed eater line it finally broke up and got spit out.

If you are getting water out of the exhaust relief holes it should come out the tell tale also.
Have you pulled the hose and fitting for it and made sure nothing is blocking it? Bugs love to clog that hose up..

Also, are you sure of the temp of the engine while running? If you can keep your hand on the block for 3-4 seconds then she is probably cooling fine, just a blocked indicator or something of that sort.

thanks for the info i will check it out i just figured since it was flowing while cranking it would be good to go but when i finaly got it to start and there was no flow i got scared and replaced impeller and then when it still did same thing i thought oh man this is not good but hopefully this will fix my prob i will go try this and post back and let you know thanks very much for your info

well it has been a few days and i have spent many hours trying to get water flowing and still no luck i have pulled the lower unit so many times i feel i could do it with my eyes closed i have changed water pump again thermostat pulled all the hoses and still same problem would you have any other ideals i am open for anything
