'79 Johnson Tiller Purchase... Things to check on a used outboard before buying?

I'm looking at picking up a '79 Johnson 35hp tiller. I'm mechanically inclined, but most of my experience is with cars and trucks. What should I check prior to laying cash on the table for the motor?

Obvious things to check:

-Starts easily and runs
- Compression (hopefully he'll let me hook up a compression gauge)
- Check LU oil for water contamination

Any other tips on things to check? It'd be greatly appreciated!

Ask for a boat test. A weak LU won't reveal itself on land.

The '79 was a no go.

Found a '78 35hp Johnson for a good price. Compression test came back at 82 on both cylinders cold. Started super easy and idled well.

I want to pull the trigger but the compression values worry me.

Also check wires at the red plug. Many of that age have deteriorated insulation and corroded wires. Engine side harnesses are NLA and a bear to make yourself.

Is that with a good gauge you've used before? Gauges frequently read way off from the actual PSI.
