Re: 79 Ski Supreme Restoration Proj.

Getting back to work this weekend on the Supreme. :) Most of our materials are bought, not sure how much resin we are actually gonna us so im sure i will be ordering more... This weekend we will be cutting all of our plywood and gluing our stringers together. (Supposed to warm!) Our idea is to glue 2 3/4 pieces togther to get our thickness, and making sure we overlap joints by 3 or 4 inches. Any suggestions towards fabricating stringers.?

Finally got some wood on the boat!!

We ended up putting some PB between the fiberglass transom and the wood we installed. Gonna head over in a few days and tab them in and this weekend get them glassed in.
Excited the rebuid is finally starting.

Is that MG Plywood? Thought I saw some voids in the edges of the stringers. and as an FYI Marine Grade plywood will Rot just like any other plywood if it gets wet and sits for a long time. Almost any wood will rot eventually. Some take longer than others.;)

Yes it is MG. Just taking the safe route at this point, since this is my first rodeo..:) Im hoping by the time everything is glassed that water will not be able to reach the wood period! We are doing two layers of glass over the transom and stringers. Thanks for the info. Any sugg on what to put between the hull and stringers before bedding them?

Spent last weekend fabricating and bedding the stringers in the hull.

Great progress. I've got a thing for inboards as well. Any idea on how you are going to finish the floor?

Re: 79 Ski Supreme Restoration Proj.

Hey there. Thank You. I really enjoy them as well! We just have to make sure the floor is not too high or the cap will not fully seat. From our measurements we seem to be slightly low or right on. The floor will sit centerline of the stringer and out to the wall of the hull. We also have measurements of the hull from top to top to make sure we keep the distance the same. Once the floor is glassed to the stringers and hull wall, we will not be able to change much as far as the width goes. The sides of the floor we are using 1708 mat and then cover the entire floor with a light cloth (i think i have 4oz) to help protect the wood. The idea is to use no screws in the entire process.

Re: 79 Ski Supreme Restoration Proj.

Are you using Epoxy or Poly Resin? How did you bed the stringers? What did you tab the stringers to the hull with? Did you Pre-coat the stringers first?

We are using epoxy throughout. The stringers we made PB and added some chopped cloth in as well. The stringers were also tabbed with PB just without the chopped glass. Yes the bottom of the stringers were precoated before we bedded them. I need to finish coating the left and right sides before we glass. Sound like we are heading in the right direction?

Yep, so far so good. What fabric/cloth are you using for the stringers?

Would you be so kind as to post a photo of the Bell housing looking down from above and perhaps a side shot of it with the motor? I'm researching something but can not find a photo.

Thanks,

Re: 79 Ski Supreme Restoration Proj.

Awesome! Yes I will get a photo looking down over the engine and side shot. I purchased 34 yds of 1708 and about 10 yds of 4oz cloth. I have been reading that its a little harder to lay 1708 with epoxy resin but others say they had no problems. The mat does seem pretty flexible and I did make sure that it would work with epoxy resin. Our plan is to lay 2 coats over the stringers and transom. Any idea a time frame to lay the second layer?

Re: 79 Ski Supreme Restoration Proj.

IMHO using 1708 with epoxy is a waste. The mat just soaks up the epoxy and offers very little to the mix. You'd be better off using straight 17oz biaxial cloth. Again just my opinion. You can do both layers at the same time. Epoxy due to the longer cure times is a bit more problematic on vertical layups. It wants to sag and run so you have to stay with it and keep "Pulling it up" onto the surface so it doesn't all end up at the bottom of the substrate. You can get the "Fast Cure" Epoxy that helps some.

Thanks, the photo will help tremendously, I'm exploring rear motor mounts as well as fronts and wished to view how they attach and where they attach to the block. Thanks again!

Re: 79 Ski Supreme Restoration Proj.

Yeah that is what i have been reading. We actually got the transom glassed in yesterday and didnt have too much trouble with two people working it. It did take a good bit of resin to wet out but not a terrible amount and wasnt all that bad doing vertical layup at the transom. I should have the motor pics here in the next day. We ended up doing both layers of the transom together. Hopefully gonna stop by tomorrow and see how it turned out. This week gonna try to get the stringers, rudder plate and lower ski pole holder glassed in.

Hello all! This past weekend we were able to get some more glass down on the stringers. We also got the base plate for the ski pole set in with PB.49734C9E-6C14-4FB6-961E-EAC5762E8635_zpso2mvyqt4.jpg
