Re: '79 Starcraft SS 16 restoration

You guys crack me up:D

Had the rig out on my closest local lake last night after dealing with Murphy's latest antics:rolleyes:

Seems like I will be ordering another $9 40 amp relay kit as I failed to properly secure the other new one in a dry location:eek:

We had to hot wire the trim/tilt last night, a minor aggravation. We brought the whole crew, my fishing buddy, the two boys and Roslynn of course.

I quickly realized why I haven't been to this lake in several months as I spent a good part of the evening untangling weeds wrapped around whichever prop I happened to have in the water.

This lake is much more shallow than I remember, due to a fairly dry summer here in Michigan. My oldest son got to test out his newer, bigger closed-face rod/reel and he was a happy camper:)

We had intended to buy my youngest(2yrs) son a brand new Scooby Doo setup but they didn't have any...only Spiderman.

So we convinced them to go along with a trade, so the younger angler got big brother's slightly used scooby doo setup and we bought the new bigger one. Lots of diplomacy involved here, but everyone is very happy with the outcome.

Merc is still running very rough so I am looking into getting a diagnosis before I run her into an early grave(even though she's older than me).

Re: '79 Starcraft SS 16 restoration

I'm happy to report that all it took was two new relays and my CMC bracket is again working on the switch.:D We opened up the old relays and they were in fact fried.

Cheap fix, just need to keep them dry and they should be fine. I've been working on my AeroCraft lately and taking breaks to fish on the Starcraft:)

The plan to paint the little boat and trailer to practice first is working well. Link to that thread is in my signature if you want to see boring trailer painting pics:D

I am really leaning towards bringing the SS up north with us on vacation starting this friday for 10 days(tick...tock...tick...tock--time is really dragging for me this week;)).

Hopefully I will be able to post up some nice video of the rig planed out on Lake Huron glass, there are a few islands that I'd like to check out...and some walleye, trout and hopefully salmon to catch.

Do you guys think I will be fine to moor the SS on Lake Huron...bow out into the waves? There are massive limestone boulders in the area but straight out it's all sand.

I have really been debating this and I think the ample freeboard, huge splashwell, bilge pumps and solid anchoring should make it a breeze.

Of course I will be on the beach tending to a fire at night anyways, so I will be able to keep an eye on the rig:)

Any thoughts are, as always, more than welcome:D

Thanks for the visual Mike. I was just on a beach watching a fire and listening to the calm waves softly lapping the shoreline and gently rocking the boat. Then my eyes blinked, and poof...oh well, send us some pics my friend. Nice to know water/weather conditions are all you have to worry about when you leave your boat anchored.:p
Time to put new line on the Scooby Doo Reels!

Can't you just pull her up on the beach? Like this...

My old girl copes with waves up to a couple of feet stern out. I guess if it gets rough then, yes, anchor her bow out in a decent amount of water but the way your beach looks it'd be fine pulled up bow first. What's the tide variation on Huron (if any)?

Re: '79 Starcraft SS 16 restoration

Triton you are probably right about just beaching the rig. We have tons of sand right out front of the property(somewhat rare in that area) due to a small creek that dumps into the big lake, so not too much to worry about.

My only concern with beaching it would be having the wind pick up around 4-5am when I don't really feel like setting anchor lines farther out. With the ample splashwell that Starcrafts are known for I shouldn't worry.:)

Funny you mention the tide, I almost included that in my original post. The Great Lakes aren't affected much by the moon. Slightly but nothing noticable.

Almost time:D:D I had the rig out last night to do some "testing" prior to dragging her up north and she still floats:)

I had my fishing buddy, his girlfriend, and my oldest son(almost 5 now;)) with me on a private lake and we had a blast. Buddy's girlfriend and my boy each caught their first Black Crappie, so that was fun.

Some bats swooped in a kept things interesting after dusk too. I keep telling people that bats have radar and won't hit you...but nobody believes me.:D

We also got a lesson in celestial navigation from my son. He's able to tell which ones are planets and can find the north star and the Big Dipper:D

LOL, we are a persistent breed of boaters...;)

Them stories people hear of bats flying into heads of hair, are usually the results of arms flailing, causing a deviation of their course...fishing nets can become quite a game of catch & release with them ;)

TICK, TOCK...TICK, TOCK...:D:D

Only 30 minutes until freedom for Huron Angler:)

I've decided to bring the boat and I'm pretty excited to splash her on the big inland sea.

The only other development is a possible name for the rig, I haven't gotten any feedback on it but I'm considering "Idle Time" since I used lots of it up during the restoration(still in progress) and the boat keeps me out of trouble.

I'm always busy fishing, cleaning, or fixing something on the old girl;)

Re: '79 Starcraft SS 16 restoration

I'm on vacation and have some photos to post up. The wind has been a real force the last few days so I have been waiting for a calm day.

It's about time I splashed the rig in my favorite lake and namesake, Lake Huron. Here's the rig after being washed down this morning.

Here is what the lake looked like when we left the cottage to head for the launch. Calm and peaceful with some swans milling about.

Open water. We enjoyed a nice cruise into some bays and near Middle Island. We beached the rig on my folks property and dropped off the kids. Roslynn and I had a blast in some 3-5 footers on the way back to the landing.

The wind shifted on us while we were swimming on the beach and the ride back was full of splashes. I couldn't be happier with the way the Starcraft hull handles waves. It would take 7-10 foot waves to swamp this thing(and I'm not sure that would do it either):D
