Well I got the camera back so here are some photos.

The boys came over to the boat garage a little while back, since they hadn't seen the rig for a bit and they missed pretending to captain the ship.

Nolan handed Braden the paddle and said "the motor broke off, we have to paddle to shore" :D

And here is the huge tachometer...one of the risks of buying cheap things online.

Not sure what I will do with it since a brand new Evinrude Etec 80hp comes with a BRP tach gauge.:p

Roslynn took some photos of me working. Not working hard mind you, just regular working. The transom wood is looking good, almost ready for drilling holes out and resin.

Some more photos of the transom work. Test fitting the wood, and making sure it fits. In this photo it was not pushed all the way down yet.

The paint came off the stern easily. It seems like the stuff under the waterline is much easier to get off. It makes me think that back in the day my boat was kept at a dock all summer for years.

Above the waterline the most of the factory paint is in remarkably great condition still ,with the exception of the gunwales and splashwell where it took lots of direct sun.

I am leaning towards a light grey for bottom paint, and keeping some yellow trim.

Yah, spose if we wanted some shots of a hard working boat builder you'd be holding the camera and Roz would be in the photo:D

Good call on the new tach, I totally forgot that the new Etech's comes with one. That gigantor one you have makes the SS look like a speed boat sitting on the dash like that:)

Looking good my friend!

Progress is progress HA, Glad to see your hard at it. With any luck I will have my shop finished to the point I can move the SS in out of the cold, and start working on it.

If I ran the camera and Roslynn did the work we'd be done by now LOL.:D

That boat garage is gonna be sweet, I bet you can't wait to get the rig under the roof.:)

Yeah I have quite the race boat, that tach will be barely hitting 3k rpms max with this beat up old Merc. I'm gonna run it like a rented mule this spring while I look for a better-running motor. Gotta decide to pay student loans or buy a nicer outboard:facepalm::D

Nice job on the transom. She's coming along fine. And it's going to be so much worth the work. Keep up the good work.:)

Thanks TC, progress is slow but we are getting there:)

Looking forward to finishing the transom so I can get to work on paint prep and interior stuff.

I'm in northern Michigan on an ice fishing vacation now, back to work next week.

New member, first post and I just finished reading this ENTIRE THREAD. Yes, the whole thing....took two days. I mainly checked it out because your boat looks just like one I'm possibly looking to buy (17' Sea Nymph w/80hp Merc) and I wanted to see what I could be in for as far as repairs if they're needed.

Well, little did I know, that this would be the build of builds and something I could only hope to do half as well.

Kudos and cheers from the west coast, just north of Seattle.

Buy it! You'll love it. Tinnies are great and so much easier to restore than 'glassers. Check out this thread http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=385090 for all the Starcraft restos. Most should be pretty similiar to your Sea Nymph.

Thanks VooDuu, I appreciate the kind words. If you were impressed with my slow, long-term project, you'll really like North Beach's and a many others that are complete:D

Welcome to iboats, great place for time and money-saving advice from folks who've done all this before. There are guys that have forgotten more than I know about boats here:)

Aluminum boats have some serious advantages when it comes to restorations. You will be surprised how easy they are to work on.

Good luck to ya!

Here ya go Bcast.

Fletcher's floodwaters at Jack's Landing. We caught one huge crayfish and saw tons of fish. Roslynn had a nice 36" Northern eyeballing her waxworm but the boys were too loud and scared it away too soon.

They will stare at the bait for long periods of time and being quiet helps a bunch.

We all had a blast though, and we will be back this summer to catch those Pike.

Yeah, there's no way I'll ever own a boat that's not a tinny (except for my Mad River 14 foot canoe which is basically plastic). I've got a 12 foot tinny that must be at from the early sixties, maybe fifties that gets me around the lakes for now....but I need something bigger for crabbing and salmon fishin. I'll check out some of those builds you spoke of for inspiration......the boat I was lookin at is offline now, so it must've sold....it's all good, there'll be more.

Good times, pretty warm in that shanty. It was rigged up with propane heat and was toasty:)

The radar has all sorts of action headed our way. We aren't driving back downstate until tomorrow so we should be ok.

Take a look at this thread...tons of starcrafts out on the west coast and we have guys in OR and WA that keep a close eye out for good deals.

We'll get ya one if you want, take your time though. I waited for about one year to find a good deal and the exact size and model I wanted. I have a 12' tinny that got me on the water while I was looking so you are all set there.

Try to find a freshwater only boat if you can since the corrosion is not a problem. There are some in Idaho that have not seen the ocean.:)

Also take a peek at some of the brochures(link in my thread) if you want to see some in original condition.

Re: '79 Starcraft SS 16 restoration

Spent some time yesterday and on friday working on the transom and splashwell.

The dry fitting is not going so well, there are a couple areas where the width is tight. I bought a couple grinding stones and took off a stubborn layer of foam/seal stuff off the inside edge of the splashwell, hoping the two pieces would slide into place easier.

Not the case. There's a spot on either side where the splashwell attaches that juts out and is making this a bit of a pain.

Not sure if it's been bent or what. I'm now wishing that I'd removed the entire splashwell, but I didn't because this way is easier:facepalm::D

I'm gonna sand down the ply in that spot so it fits, and keep moving forward hopefully.

Hoping to get the wood drilled and epoxied this week. Then it's back into teardown phase, all wiring, consoles, windshield and bow structure is gonna be removed again so I can finish the interior finally.

No leads on a new motor yet, and part of the motor budget went into a 2009 Ford Flex. The transmision on our van went out right when we were heading 4hrs north last week, and I wanted to have a back-up tow vehicle rather than a mini-van anyhow.

It's rated for 4500lbs and I'm getting a full-size hitch installed once the snow melts. Anyone know when that's supposed to happen?
