79 Starcraft SS Worth it???

Good Evening!

Whats your thoughts on the following Craigslist post?

I "think" I got him talked down to $300.00.... worth it or not? I am not a new boat owner and would take the time to fix this up (floor, transom, paint...).

Is the motor junk, thoughts?

You must live in another world. 500 for a boat in that condition???? I would have to have a police escort if I sold one for that price here on the west coast. Get real the value is there Gezzzzzzz.

Make sure the police aren't around when you buy it, even at $500. its a steal. Water pressure not an issue on those Mercs but low cylinder compression means possible rebuild. No matter, the boat is worth the money alone. But you posted yesterday, so you got it last night....right?

'79 was a good year for the SS model in my opinion...hope you got it cause it's not gonna be around forever at that price.

That motor is worth $300 in parts.

Done deal! I'm picking it up tomorrow night for $300.00! He wanted to keep the fish finder at that price...

As far as the bad cylinder, will have to do my own tests but if it is indeed bad, does that seal the deal on a junk motor? I think I want an 85HP on it anyway, FAST is more fun!

Now I just have to sell my current boat: 1969 17 foot Larson Volero 177 w/ 69 Merc 100 HP. I ought to be able to get $800.00 or so for it and then find my 85 HP. Now seems to be a good time to pick up a motor.

The wife is not too thrilled ("You already have a boat! Why do you need another!?") But I told her that the larson has some soft spots and you never know what that means in the long run of rot... Time to get to the tin and not have to worry about the bottom falling right apart!

Will post pics when I actually have the boat. Rebuild thread....here I come!

If the motor runs I'd run it, my Merc has some issues but it runs and I will have to replace it down the road but for now I'm trying to get as much use out of it as I can.

Congrats, you got a good deal on the rig Looking forward to seeing some more photos.

Congrats Chuckn' and welcome. I'm not so sure your going to go that much faster with a 85 vs a 60. I would check it out good and like HA said run it if its ok. You could always switch motors out with the one your going to sell
The bad part is the bigger the motor the more gas you use and its harder to go slow. Speed is nice ( I know) but slow and steady is better. Yeah , I'm old.

I'm searching Mapquest tonight and if you haven't bought that boat by Friday when I get off work...... I'll have a restore thread starting on Saturday night. Man, I'm searching the wrong parts of the country! Go get it before the guy talks to his friends. Nice find.

Tonight is the big night! I am all giddy with excitement!! Only 9 more hours until I am en-route!

Listed my other boat last night, had one bite on it. Guy wondered why there was marine tex on the bottom (I have patched a place or too where the fiberglass was showing... I told him "its a 41 year old boat that stays dry sitting in the water all week, whats the issue?" Might be tougher to sell this old cat than I thought! I could sell it for $300 and just recoup my new boat costs but then I have no money left for rebuild...

The wife is definitely not thrilled about two boats in the driveway...I told her that it is like having a his and her set. Also, we have two tow capable vehicles and now one boat per!

Update... No pics, and no boat. Drove all the way out there and the thing is absolute junk... Dents were the ultimate kicker (I could of resto'ed anything else) and the guy started making changes, requesting more money for the battery, for the gas tank and hose, etc. I told him goodluck and moved on! Back to the for sale ads!

Patience is a virtue...especially when dealing with used boats

You will find a good one, you live in Minnesota for Pete's sake...so there are plenty of fish in the sea so to speak.

It tough to walk away like that, but it sounds like you did the right thing. There are a lot of good Starcrafts out there - including yours! You just gotta wait for the planets to line up correctly.

This search site also helped me immensely - cause you can search Craigslist in many, many cities all at the same time. I just hit it three or four times a day until I found the right one.
