Re: 79 Starcraft SS Worth it???

I know Ill find one. I recovered nicely last night after downing a good 3 Keystone's! :)

Right now though...I just feel like I am that guy, on the outside of the gated community, peering through the hole in the fence watching you all boat around and fix up your boats.... LET ME IN!:D

What I think Im going to do is look for a boat without a motor. I really would love to transfer my 69 Merc 100HP, its a beautiful motor that just, in my opinion, fly's! I love hitting the hole on my 17' Larson with it and can only imagine what it would do on a 16' Aluminum!

Ill keep lurking, might need to get involved on that "covert operation" and pick up a left over along the way!

Hey Papa -

You live just down the road from me (although on the wrong side of the river! :) ) Im over ins South St Paul myself. We ought to connect sometime and maybe get the boys (I have two of em, 4 yrs and 2yrs) out on the river fishing! I usually launch south of downtown St Paul. Nice to have a fellow Iboater in the neighborhood!

Hows the restore coming?

Hey Chuck, update your location in your profile. It may help us find you a boat.

Buddy, be careful, since not all 16 SS's will take the 100 hp motor. I have 1979 SS 16er and it takes only 85 max. Maybe they increased the capacity later.
Also wonder how they did it.

The 16' SuperSports were never rated for anything over 85hp. We have seen a V4 115 Johnnyrude do well bolted on one however:D

My inline 4 80hp is heavy enough so I personally wouldn't want anything bigger unless I got an 18 foot rig.

It is interesting, since new Starcrafts 17 footers are rated to 140!
However 16ers are only up to 90hp.

Still wonder if 1 foot of difference makes such a difference. Or they reinforce transom better

To throw a curveball into the mix, keep in mind that the HP rating on outboards changed in the early 80s from rating it at the crankshaft to the prop or something to that effect, so older outboards and boats are skewed by that also when compared to new ones.

A new 60hp Evinrude etec would push my rig just as fast as an older 70-80hp motor in my opinion(and save tons on gas/oil to boot:)).

The newer hulls have more aluminum reinforcement on the transom as well in my opinion.

Sorry for hijacking the thread, but looks like it is almost closed.

This is a VERY interesting topic Huron. Here is the BIG question - if the hull was rated in 70's for 85 hp and we will put brand new 85 on it, would it cause damage? I honestly do not think so, but if you are saying that there is such a difference in power than I can assume that new 85 is similar to 100hp old one.

I got a grease gun with dark grease in it....

No problem on hijacking the thread. Its about wrapped up until I find another Starcraft option. I am guessing the available boats will only increase in the coming weeks. Until then Ill tool around in my 17ft Fiber.

As far as mounting the 100HP on the 16', I understand I would be overpowered BUT if I was to be rebuilding the transom myself anyway, I would sure build it to hold such a motor! Now, its weight versus HP gained probably would water down some of the performance returns, as HA lead too... but I love that 100HP!

Probably Ill be looking for a 16' or 18' Starcraft but hoping for a 16'. If it were an 18 though, then I would not need a motor :)!

In regards to 85HP now versus back then, I would bet the 16' starcrafts of the 60's and 70's would NOT hold a 85HP 4-stroke, those motors make my 100HP look like a kicker!

Re: 79 Starcraft SS Worth it???

I was told a few years back Suzuki was the first to start rating hp at the prop. I did my own "comparison" by racing a boat the same as mine and everything pretty equal ( well I had 40lbs on him). I had a 60 hp Suzuki and he had older Johnson 85Hp. I whupped up on him from the hole shot and on. With that 60 I could do a blazing 41mph, and it sipped gas too.
I should be beat for selling that one:mad:
