Hey, I have a 280 leg on my 24 ft seacraft, last weekend I tore the cone clutch out of it so I am in the process of fixing that. What Im wondering is..... I am thinking about putting a 290 dp lower on it. I know the transom has some issues so at some point I am gonna have to replace that. After reading the workshop brochure for my drive I now see that I am not spose to try to trim it out with the tilt mech. Is there someway to get trim on it? Different transom plate? Is there one that will let me trim?? I have to do something because the performance of the 280 single just plain sucks imo and the feedback on the wheel was so bad I had to convert it to hydraulic or if I had to try to avoid something to the one side I couldn't. It is livable now but still not right, I broke a bolt on the steering helmet once (due to feedback I presume) That was a barrel of monkeys for a couple of seconds till I got her slowed down.

Don't know if your catching what I'm throwing or not. Sounds like the d.p.'s are the #@$%. Eventually I will upgrade to a new drive but for now was thinking a used one.

From what I have seen, the aq's with power trim are kinda rare. There should be a trim skeg, right under the exhaust outlet on the outdrive, that is adjustable with an allen wrench. In my opinion, I would fix the transom, before adding the duoprop. Again, just my opinion.

You have three different trim posititions for that drive, what hole is the trim adjusting pin in now?

I forgot all about the pin! Look for the Swiss cheese at the bottom of the transom plate. Bring some wrenches and play with the pin. That might help you out!

Re: 79 volvo 350/ 280 drive

the AQ series ran clear into the 1995 as Volvo's primary drives and even further with the diesel drives up to about 2002.

Power trim STARTED on the 280 drive with its introduction to hydraulics. ALL AQ SERIES DRIVES from that 280 T drive on had power trim

Also, model numbers took a drastically different appearance.

Some have thought that the end of the AQ series came when Volvo stop putting the AQ before the power train model number.

Where we formerly saw, for example AQ-260..... we now see 5.7GLPMDA, 5.7GIPMDA, 5.7GIPMDACE and 5.0FIPHURCE, 5.0FIPHUSCE, 5.0FLPHUR, 5.0FLPHUS, 5.8FIPHURCE, 5.8FIPHUSCE, 5.8FLPHUR, 5.8FLPHUS, 5.8FSIPHURCE, 5.8FSIPHUSCE 5.0FIPHUSCE, 5.0FLPHUS, 5.8FIPHUSCE, 5.8FLPHUS, 5.8FSIPHUSCE etc., just to name a few only........

all in the AQ series family of main suspension fork and pivot tube geometry.

The good stuff followed the early drives and with no compromises and evolved into, in my opinion, the best outdrives ever developed. I WILL FIGHT TO THE BITTER END WITH THIS OPINION AND HAVE ALL THE FACTS TO SUPPORT THIS JUDGEMENT. :D

With the above stated, find an old wreck of a boat with a 280 T shield or a 290 even with a bad volvo drive that you can pick up for a few dollars. Use your drive and mount it to that shield. (If 290 some swapping will have to occur).

I just converted a 280 from a single prop to the DUO for a customer and he came back a few weeks later for me to repair his trim cylinders. The whole time in my garage he went on and on about the DUO PROP and how the boat is a whole different animal and that it does this and does this, lol. :D I did not want to be ignorant and say I KNOW, I KNOW, lol

Again with this stated, make sure you keep the upgrade in mind as you will never regret it.

Thanks for the replies. The upgrade isn't gonna happen till I fix the transom (which isn't too bad) so I should be fine. Just testing the waters trying to figure out what I want to do. For now I will be happy getting it back up and running as is.

I do not see a trim pin anywhere on it. Looks like the tilt mech stops right on the transom plate.

Here is what I'm looking at now.

The only pin that I see is the one in the pic and it doesn't appear to be adjustable in any way.

Here is the tag off the upper gear case.

It is a big clubby looking ordeal on the back of the boat now :( And what a pia to take the drive off! I would like to upgrade the transom plate to something that looks a little more modern someday. Are the 290 plates not quite as bulky??? Thanks

(I will be asking some stupid questions from time to time. Bear with me)

Doesn't look like a regular 280 or 280t?

If that is the case should I keep it or change it??

I made a mistake above and should have said 280 PT. There were some problems with the 280 T. I have not worked on any but have read up on some issues.

Yes, you have the PT which has power trim. Personally have only seen 3 of them live, and only have worked on one, lol. :p

Re: 79 volvo 350/ 280 drive

Are the sx's a decent unit? I would like to eventually upgrade to a newer more modern drive. Are they duo prop compatible?? I like the look of them, but don't want to downgrade either. Would I need a complete donor boat to get it done or just the transom plate (doubtful) I have a decent budget but not saying money is no object either. I have excellent mechanical skills just very little experience volvo's, last boat had a cobra in it and I like that, no problems with it. If not sx's, what should I keep my eyes open for? Or should I just leave it alone?

Edit; ok after more searching I see that there is a 290-sx conversion bell housing and also a transom shield???? Is it that easy?
What about a DPS-A??
Does it matter that I have an old school motor?? (pre-88-89) IDK I'm just bored. :(
