Have an 8.1 volvo that when run will now get a green tint to the the fuel at the water separater. This is a GXI unit with closed cooling.I suspect a freeze damaged heat exchanger or fuel cooler or both.Has anyone else seen this?

The words 8.1 Volvo covers a lot of different systems and setups. Care to post a full model number or Volvo SN. Year doesn't help either.

OK I'll play along. This is an 8.1GIHF #4012223052 that orginally had water intrusion issues into the fuel. A boatbuilder problem that has supposedly been remmedied.Fuel samples into the fuel pump/filter/cooler unit are clean and normal but after ten minutes of running that water separator filter comes off with a sample with a substantial green tint and the engine begins to run poorlly. As I've stated before,I suspect freeze damage in both the fuel cooler and the heat exchanger but would'nt mind a second opinion.

Pressure test BOTH sides of the fuel cooler, one at a time, checking for pressure to fall off.

Ditto the heat exchanger.

Did this thing freeze before the builder sold it to you?

The fuel cooler is raw water cooled, but it is downstream of the heat exchanger. Here is a link to the flow diagram (too big to post here)

I would also check your engine oil and power steering fluid. If it is freeze damage that is causing the problem, then the engine oil and the PS cooler may also be damaged. When running, the oil and PS fluid will leak into the water stream, but I have also seen water in the coolers leak into the oil when the engine is off. Especially if the coolers are below water level.
