So today a friend tried to pick the 8HP Evinrude out of the water by the handle. Long story short, the handle broke. The metal pin in the handle fell out, the plastic part in the handle is gone now. Its one that has a twist grip for the throttle. I dont even know the names of the parts I am looking for. I dont have the year of the motor, but will try and get that tomorrow. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Re: 8 HP Evinrude

Yes try to find the model number on the plate on the transom bracket.

Ignore the last letter and taking the previous two (if its any date since 1980) will identify the year according to INTRODUCES where I=1, N=2 etc up to E=9 and S=0

So in E8CRM C=8, R = 4 making an '84 model.

The number may also be on a core plug on the engine ... mine is, but half hidden by the coils IIRC.

I think unless it's some very much older model its going to be from between 1984 and 2001. As far as I can see there are only two variations in the design of that handle during that time.

Look in the "mid- section" part of the parts lists

Yes you've guessed I've broken mine too! No metal part in the handle though just plastic and a spring. Maybe yours is a later one, mines 1984.

So poor as a lifting and carrying handle I might not bother to replace it! Could easily have broken and dropped the motor into deep water! Thinking about trying to make something stronger!

You can just see the plate on the transom bracket in this photo
