when you say respond, does it just idle and all of a sudden take off. not very clear description.

Re: 80 hp 1988 no get up and go

I have an '86 70 HP Merc and it is often a bit hesitant to "get up and go." Not 30 seconds, but a few at most. I did run a can of Sea Foam with about 4 gallons of premium gasoline a few weeks ago and ran it wide open for a little while. It really seemed to make a difference. This past weekend, however, it started doing the same thing although not quite as bad as before. I guess I'll try another can and see what happens.

Re: 80 hp 1988 no get up and go

Had the same issue of no hole shot with a '78 800 (80 hp) even after a carb cleaning and fuel pump rebuild. At the suggestions of the experts here at iboats, I re-cleaned everything and checked my float adjustment (both were off 1/8") followed by Clams' "link and sync" (not sure how much I like 'sync' in a sentence about boats...). Problem promptly went away. First hole shot almost threw me out of my seat!

I also think that you should check the primer bulb and fuel line.
