Hello,

I just got a nice clean 80 hp 4 cyl. mercury outboard. Problem is there is 2 different kind of spark plugs in the engine now. The serial # is 7169892 I have been banging my head against the computer for 2 days now and cant find any information on what plug to use. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you

What are the current plugs, same type, different numbers, or differnt types ie Champion /NGK? I didn't check the serial number out, I am on dial up at the cottage, and that take too long to hope around the site, but I'd almost guess you should have Champion J6C's, or equivlent.

Thanks for the info, the plugs are different numbers and different types. I don't remember off the top of my head and the boat is back in storage till next weekend.

J6C's aint' gonna run this puppy!!!! This motor requires longer-reach plugs and the J6's wouldn't even come close to the correct heat range even if they were the proper reach.

This motor most likely came from the factory with Champion L76V spark plugs.

The AC equivalent to that is V40FFM.

Or Autolite 2854.

Many prefer to use NGK plugs and you'll find the newer Mercs using them.

The NGK equivalent to the L76V would be BUHW.

Note that if the plugs you have installed are a Mix 'n Match of any of the above, it's really not gonna hurt anything.

However, it's not common practice to mix plug brands like that and your motor would likely benefit from a new set of plugs all the same brand/type.

At minimum, it'd be less likely to offend your sensibilities!!! ;)
