I bought an 80 hp merc outboard. The only serial number is 1890906. Every time I try to get information I am told this number isn't right. I need to know where the water is pulled into the motor and where it is expelled. I was told the motor was rebuilt but not sure when. I started fine but didn't run it long as I don't know where to put the water ears.

don't run it at all without water. impeller will burn out ver quickly. easiest way is to use a barrell for water. or use muffs, which attach to a hose and clamp on side of motor under cavitation plate. where you will see intake ports. i can't see your serial number either, that number should be around 1966, but i don't see 80 hp listed then. some of the old motors have serial stamped on block, and not near swivel bracket as descibed. water blows out prop with exhaust and out peehole. some models are different depending on age and model

I am not going to run it without water I am just looking for someone to let me know where to place the water ears so I can verify if water is circulating.

On the lower leg above the cavitation plate (plate above the prop area) you will see slots or intake holes. Fit the muffs over these.

Thanks I will try there. There are so many slots and holes on this lower unit I didn't know where to try.
