I just want to run this by everyone and see if I got it right. Well I started out to do some stuff to the boat today and had my whole day planned out. I got to the water pump and things went wrong. I have done several on smaller outboards but not on anything this big. Removed the lower unit with no problems at all. I then started to remove the water pump housing and then it hit me. I got in such a hurry I forgot to put the motror in reverse. I went ahead a installed the new water pump and then installed the lower unit. I could not get it to go into anything but foward gear. The shifter would move but no netural or reverse. I pulled it back down and messed with the shift rod on the lower unit. I put it back on and everything seem right except for when it was in foward gear the prop was locked in both direction and when in rev it would lock in one direction and rachet the other. From what I remember this is backwards. Off with the lower unit again (getting good at this). This time I put the lower unit in reverse and put the shifter in reverse and reinstalled the lower unit back. Now the prop locks in reverse both directions and rachets in foward gear clockwise ( looking from the rear of the motor). Is this the correct way this to operate or was I right the first time. I cranked the motor up and have a good Pee stream and shifts inn foward to reverse ok. Could use some advise from the experts. Thanks in advance
