Re: 80 inline 6 questions

will the 1150 overhaul gasket set on this website be for my 84 inline?
ALL inline 6 build between 1973 ( +1972 140 ) and 1988 uses the same gasket kit, are some differences but todays gasket kits are a "one for all" kits .
( Mercury #27-85653A87 )
bump....does it have a thermo?
No thermostat on this engine,

i dont think it does and that may have caused the first engine failure
Maybe, but usually #1 are the first to blow because of lack of cooling .
It's always a good idea to replace the water pump when rebuilding an engine ( impeller and gaskets only IF the rest are OK )

. I did pull up a 1984 motor on youtube and it pissed right away. This guy is saying that it needs to warm up first,
Should only take 2 > 3 sec before the water start running, you could try to clean the pisser hose.
( only some of the water exits tru the pisser ( for indication only ) , most of it escapes inside the exhaust leg )

I always uses an old barrel for water ( fills water so it's ABOVE the pump ), don't like/trust those muffs/clocks.

Steam are NOT a good sign, inspect the block closely for possible cracks ( not likely but.. )
  • Replace water pump
  • Check water intake on the lower unit ( good flow and NO obstructions )
  • Replace ALL gasket in the water pump ( under and above SS plate )
  • Replace the rubber ring on top of the pump housing
  • Check and/or replace the rubber seal in bout ends of the water tube ( copper tube )
  • And since you got the powerhead off ?? the engine, you could replace the gasket under the exhaust plate ( work your way down to the top rubber engine mounts )
  • If the powerhead are still splitted you could inspect and possible do some cleaning inside it's water passages...
ALL gaskets needed are includes in the gasket kit, those rubber parts are also included in the engine gasket kit.
IF the pump housing are good you can replace the impeller only ( Mercury #47-89984T4 ) , gasket are in the engine gasket kit .
Else order the full water pump kit ( Mercury # 46-96148A8 )

Re: 80 inline 6 questions

Project complete! This Beast runs real well, except i need to adjust the idle, i will do this in the water next week. Took lower unit off to replace impeller and found the problem of the water not immediatly coming out the pisser. The rubber tube for the feed line from the water pump was....not there...? He must have forgot it when he assembled it a couple of years ago. Only shot water through the pisser when engine was reved up.

All is working as it should now though, took two days(18 hours total) to build this engine by the book, but well worth it. Cant wait to get out this weekend.

Thanks again for all you guys help on this matter.

Re: 80 inline 6 questions

what is your best advise for the idle Droll? or anyone else. I think the book say s 750 -800 but i would have to dig it out and look...this thing runs awsome idling at 1100 rpm but i know that is to high...

Re: 80 inline 6 questions

Follow the book :).... 750 > 800 IN gear ON water, worst case 900 > 1000 but that's gonna hurt your lower unit in the long run, especially if you're running a high pitch solid hub propeller.....

Idle rpm will change with the conditions, out of water on muffs ( = no pressure against the exhaust ) will give higher idle...

Re: 80 inline 6 questions

This I know very well, that is why i have not adjusted anything till I get it out on the lake out here.

Which forum do i need to post clearcoat/sandind questions to, please? i can only get on for a few minutes at a time and need some tips on clearcoating or gel coating the boat.
