I recently cleaned carbs and put in new kit. Started it up and it ran fine. Put fast idle arm in run position and put into rev. and backed up. Put it into neutral and it died. Started it up again and putfast idle arm in run position and it died. I tried this several times and it always dies when fast idle arm is put into run position. I manually held throtlle to prevent it from dieing and put it into gear and it woud die instantly any help?

Re: 80 Johnson 70HP;will not idle

If the only thing that's changed to make it not run at anything faster than idle is the carb rebuild, then I would start checking the linkage and fuel line connections that were moved during carb removal.

Check to make sure the carb to intake bolts are tight.

Check the electric choke.

If everything external checks out, you may have to pull the carbs back apart and see if there was an assembly error.

check compression and spark on all 3 cylinders, i use to have a 69 115hp, your idle could also be set too low, idle has the be set with the boat in the water, and in gear.

Sorry it took so long to reply, but couldn't find my post. Was searching title. finaly advanced searched my name.
Anyway. I removed carbs and dipped them again. Gunk recommened soaking for 20 mins. I should have done it longer the first time. Put everything back together and it is working great. took it out all day last Tues. and not a bit of problems. Thanks for help and advice though.
