Trying to adjust idle with directions from solec. It says to turn the screw below the timing arm that connects to the timer base clock to increase and counter to decrease. My problem is the screw is all the way turned in and its not even touching the block!

It looks like increasing the idle is really just advancing the timing...is that right?

Anybody have good (not solec) link and sync directions for a Johnson 1980 V-4 ?

I looked in Solec for that throttle cable adjustment but didn't find it. It is adjusted so the large mark on the throttle cam is aligned center with the roller.

where your throttle cable goes into your engine, there is a plate with 1 or 2 bolts holding your throttle cable in place, remove the plate, pull the cables out of the slot and see if you can make your throttle linkage go into idle position. If you can you need to turn the round plastic part that goes into the slot until your cable allows your linkage to operate in full range of motion both WOT and full idle.

As is often stated up here, original equipment manuals are the only real way to go for people who are attempting their own repairs. The aftermarket manuals are just too general and vague on many procedures to work. If you plan to keep the boat and occasionally work on it, find an OE manual correct for the year.
