Funny you ask that. I didn't have any help, so I ended up taping a piece of paper to the end of my fishing rod and reached out held it over each hole as I hit the starter button . Didn't work so well.:p

I spent a bunch of time on my sister's dock working on the motor myself. Didn't have the heart to keep making my 14yr old sit around all day in case I needed him.

No that wouldn't work very well as the compression blows the paper out of the way. If you held it there I bet the 14 yrd old would have loved to crank the engine over. Would have found the problem sooner! He should reap the rewards now because you have to take him fishing.

I did a bunch of fishing while working on the motor at the dock. I had my pole in the boat and would cast to any fish rising. Caught a bunch of smallmouth and some rock bass.

My son is more interested in "going fast" than fishing right now.

Classic!

It sounds like you've got 'er just about wrapped up. Great! It also sounds like you either know how to maximize the speed from experience or else you've been doing some good research here on the forum. Adjusting the tilt does affect the maximum speed so you'll have to play with it a bit. Also, prop choice has a big impact on top speed. All of this is well discussed on past threads. Good luck topping it out.

Yup, I definitely have a read a ton here. I try to help myself when I can rather than ask questions that have been asked here a million times before.

As much as I've hated all the frustration with my motor...I've become much more familiar with dropping the lower unit, adjusting shift linkage, cleaning carbs, timing, setting points, etc etc and general troubleshooting.

A couple months ago, I knew nothing about outboards whatsoever.

Update: Dropped port cylinders today....again.

I started a new thread about the problem.
