Hi,haviing intermittent spark problems, just a quick question. If my starter bendex is staying engaged can that cause spark problems.I have just been testing output on stator ,i got 180v blues and 20v reds and the trigger didint register output but im not sure if my meter is that accurate to read 4v and noticed my starter has stayed ingaged with the fly wheel the whole time. The tach says its winding over around 300rpm.Any ideas. Thanks

Re: 80s 115 Mariner

Hi,just a parts question. The parts number for the power packs on this model say from 1979 to 1989 332-7778. another site says the parts number is 332-7778A12.I can purchase a couple of packs cheapish but the parts number on those are 332-7778A1.Is there any difference and what does the A1 and A2 mean. The 332-7778 parts number covers 90hp 3 cylinder all the way up to the 6 cylinder motors.Got me abit confused.I cant read the serial numbers on mine. Thanks

Re: 80s 115 Mariner

When Merc revises a part they add the 'A#'

The # is how many times that part has been revised.

I have seen some 'A78'

Either part should work fine for your application.

You really need to check the triggers again, maybe use another meter.

The starter gear is 'thrown' back down when the motor fires, so it it normal to see the gear remain up and engaged when doing cranking tests.

Cleanliness of starter brushes/commutator, as well as ALL battery cable connections are critical to maintain required minimum cranking speed of 300 RPM. If your tach is even slightly off, a slow cranking speed can cause an intermittent ignition.

Thanks mate for clearing that up.I got hold of a wiring diagram and the proper test procedure for the trigger so i will test that when i can.I have the motor strapped to a tree at the moment while a new transom is put on my boat so i cant test it for a week. Thanks

The CDI modules as well as the Sierra module all play well with the OEM modules.

The advantage to a CDI module is they are sturdier than the OEM in that a Bias failure on one does not require replacing both boxes, like the OEM recommends.

Hi,i just did a quick ohms test on the trigger and couldnt get any reading on any of the wires, brown to purple etc etc.I think its buggered.Just wondering when the trigger goes bad does it effect all the wires at the same time?I was expecting maybe no reading on some not a complete bloody short.

Re: 80s 115 Mariner

Fixed the bloody thing.Turns out when i tested the trigger i was reading the ohms between 2 wires incorrect. When i finely worked that out the trigger tested fine.Put the new packs on and spark returned to all plugs. The po said he had it running before i picked it up and the fuse blew so he replaced the fuse wire because it was frayed.I replaced a few more wires that were exposed and shorting out on the block. He must have blew the packs or pack with the short out.I didnt even check whether both packs were gone, couldnt be bothered. For the price i paid for the new ones i just replaced both.Couldnt believe how good this old mariner sounds and runs. The only thing i could Knock about these old motors is the alarm system, there is none. Its premix so no worries about oil.Just needs a temp guage i think.Cheers
