Heres the deal. I put a new water impeller in a mid 80s 4 hp merc motor with a buddy. the water pump is shaft driven and that went well. when we put everything back together, the motor will not shift into neutral. We took the lower unit back off and checked everything twice and it still will not shift out of gear into neutral. there is no reverse just fwd and neut. Any ideas from anyone what went wrong? the shift worked fine before we replaced the water pump.
