Hi, Mark.. A bit late, but I can probably answer any questions you have. and you are in the right place. However, direct future motor questions to the Chrysler/Force repair room in outboard repair section for faster replies.

First ,stock power was the Force 50HP. Due to improvements in design wieghts of more modern outboard power, a modern 75HP or less would be fine. However, there is a sticker by the helm that gives max persons/HP and other info. In some areas, it is ilegal to excede these limits, and insurance claims will allways be declined.
But one other good news is, modern outboards are rated at the prop shaft instead of the powerhead crnakshaft. It used to be the other way-round, leaving real-life parameters out of the equation.... So today's 40HP is yesterday's 50HP in performance, (IE, expect an additional 10HP if you repower with a new Merc or Yammy.)

My Cobra project.

12 Footer but no.
The 15 foot boat you have, 12 Footer, is rated for 50 which is what Bayliner put on there.
The 17 foot is rated to 85 and the 19 is rated to 125 Hp.

12 Footer is right that the newer motors, say a new Evirude 90, has 20 more Hp than the old 85 they put on the 17 Foot bayliner.
The new motor are rated at the prop not the power head. Here is a great motor for the 17 foot boat :)
