Re: 81 35hp seahorse coil questions
This is a capacitor discharge igniton. there is a charging coil and a sensor coil under the flywheel. (wich I have not removed yet). The motor will start and run fine at idle. Will run great at wot for about 7 minutes then will just cut out completely. No spuddering or advance warning. Took it back to the marina and had their tech check it out. he told me it was making strong spark. The compression on both cylinders was 135.(wich i thought a little strange). He thought is was a fuel problem. after a week in the shop and cleaning the carb I just rebuilt, he suggested it may the fuel pump. Told me he ordered a check valve and it would cost me about 300.00. I told him to zip it up and I would come get it. I do own the factory service and parts manuals for this motor. there is no check valve on this fuel pump. It works with a diaphram using crankcase pressure. Anyway, just in case It cost me 47.00 from Iboats and took about 10 minutes to install. So I can rule that out. As i stated the power pack and ignition coils are new and it sure has the signs of being an ignition problem. All connections have been double checked. So that pretty much is all that is left. As was sugested I could use a hair dryer and heat the componets up and ohm them out hot. But I would have to take off the flywheel first. I guess thats my next step. After buying a puller and a torque wrench of course. Any other suggestions would be appreciated.
