Re: 81 4HP starts but cuts out after a min or two

Here's a photo (hope it works)

my.php

When I took the prop off, the little spring dropped out, The assumption on my part is the spring retained the seal you can see in the inner, around the prop shaft, but perhaps not quite as I assumed. I'm going to order both inner and outer seals based on the schematic.

Does this make sense?

Yep, order the seals according to the schematic...you're doing fine!

"1. I do need to get the carb adjustments down so that it will run at the lower end of the slow seting. Right now, much below the 'W' on SLOW I risk stalling - the above advice will help I think."

Do not worry about the "SLOW" or "START" or "FAST" written on the motor so much as the true RPM's you're getting. Take the shroud off and watch the carb linkage as you move the throttle lever and you'll see what the carb's throttle and (more importantly at low RPM's) magneto plate are really doing. The words on the side of the motor are just ballpark. If your motor idles down and runs nicely at low RPM's but the lever is just on the "W" of "SLOW", then that's where your low end idle is.

Well the seals just arrived, and now I can see, looking at my picture, that the outer seal is installed backwards which would explain how the spring fell out rather than being stuck inside which was puzzling me.

As there are two seals, I assume the inner one's spring faces out (so nothing falls into the gears if the spring breaks) and the outer spring pints inward to the gearcase as suggested. Can anyone confirm I'm right on the inner?

Once done, then on to the cosmetics as I mentioned in my other thread. This really is quite gratifying. Now I'm looking out for another motor just for the hell of it.... I will tell my wife I blame you people for getting me hooked :)

Thanks,
Mark

Oh, and I should add, the new prop also arrived today so thanks for the help hunting that down.

Yep on the seals.....the inner keeps the oil in, outer keeps the water out. Double protection. Take some Emery cloth and really shine up the shaft where the seals ride, then grease them up and good to go

Thanks Scaaty - interesting that the outer was installed wrong so good time to catch it as I'm going to pop these in tomorrow. Then on to the finals tests and the respray and restoration....

Installed the seals tonight and tank tested. Please to report it runs very nicely indeed, and will be taken out on actual water this weekend on a friends boat for a test

Well, I think I'm going to close this thread out with thanks to everyone who helped me through this.

Much appreciated,
Mark
