Great idea using the star board for your dash. I will be using that idea!

Re: 81 chaparral 187 bowrider first timer resto

I finally got around to covering the transom with 1708 today and I must say (not to scare any other newbies like myself) that it was a little harder than I thought it would be. I rolled a layer of epoxy on the transom but I think I should have went with a lot more because it seemed as if I did not even start to wet the glass. After adjusting the 1708 into place I then started to roll on more epoxy making the glass lift and bunch up, so I switched to a automotive style bondo squeege and that fixed all the problems for the most part. I worked on it for two hours and I think my hard work payed off and my back is killing me. In the first pic you can see that I left the glass long where the splashwell sits

This is why I left it long so that I could fold it over to cover the top of the transom and sides.

I am not looking forward to the stringers and was thinking about glassing them fist in the garage and then tabbing them in to the hull. What do you guys think about that?

I would do all the work to the stringers while they are in the boat starting with the tabbing to the hull first, but I am NO expert.

What I have learned that might help you:

If you are doing two layers of CSM and one of 1708 or two of 1708 do them all at once. Ondarvr was saying one layer of CSM and two of 1708 is a normal layup and that would have saved me a lot of time doing more than one at a time. If you do a layup that thick wet the living @#%# out of the surface before you put the glass down. It is eleventy BILLION times easier to push mat/cloth/biax down on resin than to push resin into mat/cloth/biax. I was amazing at how fast one csm+one 1708 wetted out when I had tons of resin behind the glass.

Once your stringers are tabbed in with whatever you use make sure the are flat and there aren't any buggers on the sides. If i would have gone over the side of my stringers with a sanding sponge 80-90% of my ugly wouldn't be there.

Hope this helps.

Hey Vert Glad to see you got some work done on the boat even with your tree dilemma. The transom came out great.

I agree with system-f on doing the work on the stringers in the boat. The only thing I would do different is seal the wood edges and all with at least one coat of epoxy before glassing them in the boat.Use a heat gun or put the wood in front of that salamander (jet heater) 1st to heat it up, this will let the resin soak in & flow easier. Doing this will seal the wood, close the pores, promote adhesion and make it easier to wet out when its in the boat.
Just my opinion
Keep up the great work

Bill

You might be new at all this but I think what you did looks great! I am sure it will be 100 times stronger than factory. Good job. Life is something we learn as we go. It looks like your learning alot buy getting in there and trying. So much is missed by those that dont get there hands dirty. Great Job

Heck you already did the hardest parts....now the easy stuff! deck and carpet, seats and an exterior cleanup......I hope you keep it or at-least get a pal who needs a boat to wrap it up and finish it up.....

I think hvac is so busy with work he cant find time to do his own boat. I am running out of room or else I would just keep it. My neighbors can be jerks sometimes so I have to be careful they dont call the town. I put the cap back on it tonight with only one layer of 1708 on the transom and moved it out of the carport. I have to build a pvc tarp holder and then cover it so it does not fill up with H20. The new boat has a new home in the carport now:D

yeah the PVC support is lots of help with keeping rain out....
it doesnt rain here muc (vegas) but when it does it finds it way into your boat....the support for the tarp is super important.
