"Even for a 25 yr old boat they want 10 grand"

Yep, I found one 2+3 , but the guy had the cap off already, and i want something neglected but intact.....its a pain to put together somesone's puzzle.

An over powered Merc OB, on an overbuilt Checkmate Hull....could be a blast...

....From the Big Lebowski Movie...

A new boat project could "really pull the room together". Maybe you could ply the admiral with "one hell of a Caucasian".

Cool Paint! Looks like you can easily repair this and make it so its not noticeable.

Looking forward to the updates....

Re: 81 Checkmate Restoration!

Thanks reblel!

Got another question.......i am wanting to reuse these items - Vent covers, rail inserts, gas tank vent hose thing on the outside of boat, rear light pole insert socket. They are all chrome plated and the chrome is peeling off.
I was going to buy all new chrome peices...but if i can reuse ill save some cash for other items i need.

Here is what i am thinking...

The vent covers are chrome plated hard plastic......Have them bead blasted then prime and paint.
Gas tank vent is chrome plated....same
The rail inserts are metal chrome plated.........Have them bead blasted then prim and paint.
The rail itself is stainless...leave it alone.

Also wanting to paint the windshield trim black....it is aluminum - Sand with 220 grit wipe down with accetone prime and paint.

What do you all think... go with the black or redo with chrome?

Re: 81 Checkmate Restoration!

You should be ok painting the plastic vents, you could propbaly get away with sanding them good instead of blasting.

The anodyzed winshield is a bit trickier, as adhesion can be a problem. You will be best served cleaning it with alumiprep or its equivelent, then priming it with an etching or epoxy primer, then paint. You may have to wax it regularly to protect it.
I see ppl having good luck with epoxy appliance paint, the rattle can stuff at Hd

ALUMIPREP NO. 33 from Aircraft Spruce

In the end, most painted windshield frames peel again, but you could get a good 5 years or so, if done right.

For mine, im just going to clean it with alumiprep product, then sand down the pitting, then compound it with 3m aluminum brightener and polish products. This way I dont have to dissasemble it like should be dont for painting. Mine is huge and heavy lol.

Maybe someone else has a new trick.

Thanks...... will do!

What do you think on the plated chrome metal pcs......think the paint will stick if i wire wheel the peeling chrome instead of blasting and then prime and paint?

Re: 81 Checkmate Restoration!

Same procedure as the winshield frame, but if the chrome plating is peeling, then try to remove it, if its not peeling bad, you can scuff the plating and prime with etching or epoxy primer.

Re: 81 Checkmate Restoration!

Update....
Been bussy around the house with honey do list.

In between the house work....I was able to wet - sand the boat.
Went with 800, 1000, 1500, 2000 - (Could'nt find the 1200 at the stores i went too, No paint store close buy) Block and hand sanding..... Then white polish compound, then wax.
A few things to note??.
1. When wet sanding ease up on the edges, you will go right thru the paint.
2. Apply 3 or more coats of paint to allow for wet sanding.
3. Use dish soap with the water?.and the best is to do it outside so you can use the water hose. I did some inside the garage and outside, outside is sooooo?much better.
4. Let the paint cure at least 3 weeks before wet sanding??I waited 2-1/4 weeks shoulda waited longer!
5. I did some web searching on enamel paint wet sanding?. All the info said it shouldn?t be done and It cant be done to enamel paint ?said it will make it duller?. Yes it does make it duller to a point, but the ladder of the too is much better.
I should have waited...but i am very Impatience person.
6. They said to wait 3 months to wax the paint....allows the paint to get harder

Fixed up the trailer.... (In trailer thread) new bunks and went with cold galvinized paint, dont look bad....alot better than before.

Boat on the trailer and outside.

Re: 81 Checkmate Restoration!

Update.......painted and installed the Windshield and grab bar. Also stuck my new Checkmate skickers.
Installed the new dash panels...But had to install the old gauges in the dash.
The way it is set up you can pull the panel and install a new gauge pack down the road.
Need the money for the new Rub-rail!

Turned out nice... I like the look!

Working on the Engine cover next, Get it painted up and installed.
