'81 Evinrude 70 HP stalling at WOT

The motor sometimes stalls when the throttle is moved from no wake speed to WOT. Sometimes giving a quick press on ignition key helps, a long press will also cause a stall. Nursing it up to WOT the engine runs fine.

When I removed the air silencer cover I noticed the two bottoms screws, the ones hard to get to, are missing and the bottom part of the cover gasket is missing. How will this affect the engine performance?

I went to a local shop to buy a new air silencer gasket and the guy said that they don't ever replace those -- just leave the gasket off. If you look at the design, he said the cork flakes off and goes down the carb throat and can f*** your cylinders. Oh, and he also informed me that people who know call it the air box, not the air silencer.

I've been operating without the gasket for about a year and no problems. ('84 70hp) Also, as long as you're talking about a couple of the 12 or so screws that hold on the cover, you should be fine without those.

As for your problem... take out the carb main jet plugs (one big bolt near the bottom of each carb's bowl) and gently push the end of a paperclip in there to dislodge any gunk. I'm betting that will get you going.

I'll try the paperclip thing.

I wonder why people in the know call it the air box when the manual calls it the air silencer?

I was concerned about the gasket because the manual has a "must be in place" note for it.
