Ok. Just some mech questions for the group. Enlighten me please:
1981 Johnson 140 HP. Took the kids tubin and heard this ratcheting sound from the motor....then thump! No forward gear (lots of thunking around). Reverse worked fine and got us back to the dock (should seen the look on the people's faces in the campground seeing a 1978 19' Viking Deck going backwards the whole way at 3 MPH!).
Drained the oil. Lots of pretty shavings (I had changed the LU oil two months ago) and one nice chunk of gear(?) stuck to the magnet on the drain. Dropped the LU and got it almost all the way torn down. I've been a mech for years (including military where all i did was work on helicopter gearboxes). It came apart without incidence, but I can't seem to figure out how to get the prop shaft out. I have the nut on the pinion broke loose and off the shaft end, but it doesn't come out because the clutch dog is blocking it. Does the drive shaft just pull straight out (all the top end of the shaft is apart, housing, thrust bearing, shims and such)? Looks like I need to get the drive shaft out of there (along with the pinion) to get the prop shaft out. Could the pinion be seized on it? Also, assuming I get that shaft out, is there something else retaining the prop shaft? I have it all the way down to the gears. With the back (reverse?) gear out, I can see that the forward gear and the pinion are missing teeth. I still have the clutch dog on the shaft. Should it pull off?
Other than torn up gears, and probably the clutch dog, the rest of the box looks decent. If I replace the gears and dog, are there any steps for shimming / checking backlash on the shafts once assembled? I'm sure that I'll have to shim the new gears to set the lash, but I don't have the specs or a procedure for it.
Any help is greatly appreciated. These are the best forums (for boating and otherwise) that I've ever visited! Thanks.
