You bet. We are planning on spraying gelcoat, even in though most if the area will be covered with floorboards. Two reasons: low weight, plus the biggest reason, to practice our gel coat spraying skills.

Stringers Underway

Here are a couple of pictures taken during the stringer process. The first is the main stringers glued up in my WOG clamps. A shout out to Woodonglass for the clamp design you see used in the picture, and as used by GT1M for his project.

MainStringerGlued.jpg

Also, since GT1M changed the game as far as workshop d?cor (his nicely decorated living room), I figured he was making a statement that stringers, the primary support for the hull, are most comfortable being born in a tranquil setting, So, I used the massage room in our salon to provide that setting. lol

Here is a picture of the stringers in place and partially tabbed in. The outer stringers are awaiting peanut butter at this point.

More pictures in a few minutes?

CK, I couldn't agree more...a nice relaxing and comforting setting for the stringers to properly reach their absolute ZEN is a must for a well balanced Ying and Yang...

You are crankin it out, man... looking awesome... great work...

I was thinking Feng Shui............

Either way, both appear to be very calming & should produce well balanced & and well cured stringers:cool: If I needed stringers for Red1, I'd definitely want them produced in similar settings.

Nice looking stringers and layup on the hull Capt'

What equipment do you have for shooting the gelcoat?

Hey WOG,

I haven't bought it yet. I read a fairly heated discussion some months ago that had a number of people arguing for their favorite type of spray gun. Lots of opinions, but I went out a bought the type Yacht Dr recommended, only to find out Harbor Freight has two guns that look the same, one is HVLP (the one I bought), but it was the other one I should have gotten, per Yacht Dr. I took that gun back but didn't get the other yet. I have several concerns about that one. First, since that time, every tool I have purchased from Harbor Freight has broken, so I am very wary about buying the gun from them. Second, since I am new to spraying gel coat, I am concerned about the three feet of hoses that have to be cleaned out after each spray. My fiberglass supplier has guns that have the gel coat canister right at the nozzle. If you take it apart, you can easily repair a gun that wasn't cleaned well.

As for a compressor, the yard where I keep the boat has one I can use. Based upon discussions I've read, their compressor is borderline adequate. They use it to spray gel coat, but they are only doing small repairs on the jet skis they rent (and man, do they get a lot of abuse). Anyway, I think we can use it for doing the inside of the hull where it won't show, so if the compressor is not big enough to keep up for serious spraying, we'll have to think about a bigger compressor.

I don't remember if you were part of that original discussion (I think you were). What are your thoughts?

Never too late rl2010. Glad to have you on board. oops! thread is now at about 178 pages, so it takes some time to read, but well worth the time. After reading it, I felt very knowledgeable about doing the fiberglass work, despite the fact I hadn't even stirred up my first mix. The thread is still there. Follow this link http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=234392

Definitely get your project going. Try to make doing the work fun and its easier to keep at it. Good luck...

GT1M, it look as though you may have started something. It'll be interesting to see if others move their workshops to this type of setting. Lot's of wives may get on your case however. lol

[h=1]Hull Layup[/h]Since we got 2 layers of tabbing in the other day, today was going to be the day for the major layup: CSM and 1708 on the hull and up the sides of the stringers. Started off OK. Took a couple of hours to cut all our pieces of FG, then got ready to mix some resin. Mixed a 2000 ml batch for the first (of 5) section and started in. Halfway through, we realized we needed another 2000 ml. So I mixed while Q continued the layup.

Then we started the next section, a bit smaller one, so we thought 2000 ml would be enough. It wasn?t. Ended up needing another 600 ml. But, for some reason, this 2000 ml batch kicked off faster than the first two. I had wetted out the 1708 while Q put in the CSM layer. By the time we were ready to lay in the pre-wetted 1708, it was being stubborn and not wanting to adhere to the first layer. We were panicking at that point. I was ready to pull off the 1708 and throw it in the trash. But a lot of fast action, a bit more resin, the bubble roller, and a lot of dabbing with the chip brushes and we got it in. But it was enough of a close call disaster that we decided that, psychologically, we would postpone further FG work today. Checking later, it came out OK with only a few small air bubbles. But like GT1M posted today, what?s done is done.

So we switched our efforts today to cutting the first two floorboard pieces. These will be the outside pieces that will be FG?d in permanently. We plan the center section of floorboard, over the water tank, to be removable. We don?t really plan on ever removing it, but don?t want to tear up the boat if the water tank ever springs a leak (just a precaution).

After taking measurements every 6 inches, both at the top of the floor level and the bottom of the floor level (so we can get the bevel), we headed off to our storage unit to get two 4x8 sheets of ply, took them to the back of our salon, drew out the lines, and cut them out..

CuttingFloorboards.jpg

At this point, we didn?t have much time left (Mrs. Kick Back was calling us to dinner). So we took the pieces to the boat and laid them on the stringers.

FloorboardsLayingOnStringers.jpg

Then before we left, we just had to stand on them just to see what it felt like. Man, did it feel good. Felt like real progress. I think once we get these completely in, we?ll feel a huge sense of accomplishment. But for now, we?ll keep plugging away.

Looking awesome CK...I can't wait to catch up...those two sections of decking have got to be real inspiring...

Since you had trouble with your layup also...that explains the "Disturbance in the Force" I felt...

Thanks GT. Hopefully I'll get some time on the boat later today (have to run down to Miami, I think Kendall area today). Maybe I can put the Force to. Work on the boat.

Hey rl,

Its just Home Depot plywood (they had a special one weekend for $25/sheet, so I bought a lot) but it is 3/4". I know a lot of people use 1/2" for flooring, but I wanted to be sure it was solid. Also,as you've seen in a number of my posts, I'm looking for weight low in the boat.

Would the new vehicle be a truck to haul it in?

I wish it was a truck but being 19 can get much for financing and my parents credit is horrible, so it gonna be a 2001 izuzu rodeo kinda my personal tow vehicle. i currently have a lil saturn and the a/c only worked for the test drive lol. But i will have access to my grandfathers big 'ol boy to do any major lifting. Now back to your regularly scheduled program. How much have you estimated the rebuild of the transom to cost because im thinking of fowling you just cause less prob w/ o/b's

Re: 81 Sea Ray 26 Sedan Bridge I/O to OB Conversion/Restore (Pics)

Hey rl,

Well the transom is basically sound. So, I don't have to do a rebuild. I do have to close up the stern drive holes but it won't cost much. Just two small pieces bonded together in each hole, some peanut butter, and a few layers of fiberglass over the holes. I also have to repair a small amount of rot around the drain plug. Nothing major.

I do plan on putting more fiberglass (1708) over the entire inside of the transom just to be sure (strength), and extra tabbing transom to hull. The 1708 is between $7 and $8 per yard (50" wide). so just the holes won't cost much. The small amount of resin for the holes won't be much either. The extra layers will take 5 yards of 1708, so that's $35 or $40, but they will drink a lot of resin (I'm paying about $20/gal).

Hope that helps.

This gun from HF will do the job IF.... YOU buy a 2.5mm tip/nozzle for it.
http://www.harborfreight.com/professional-hvlp-spray-gun-kit-93305.html

I'm pretty sure this nozzle will work on that gun.
http://www.amazon.com/NEEDLE-NOZZLE-G6600-SERIES-SPRAY/dp/B003FYNBO0
You'll need to confirm

You really need a helper to watch the time and have everything ready to do the Acetone clean up though. It's not that bad. Dump the acetone in the guns cannister slosh it around and open the guns nozzle full bore. Unscrew the nozzle cap after a bit and take a wet acetone rag and wipe the nozzle down, screw it back on and shoot some more acetone. pour out the acetone shoot some air and then reload some more Gelcoat and shoot the next coat. You got about a 20 minute window before it starts to set up in the gun so with a helper watching the time you should be able to do it without any hitches.

Thanks wog. I will have a helper whenever I spray. I assume that if the gel coat hardenes in the gun the entire gun must be replaced. Any salvagable parts? BTW, can that gun spray upward (as in the inside of a cabinet?

Re: 81 Sea Ray 26 Sedan Bridge I/O to OB Conversion/Restore (Pics)

[h=1]Progress Report[/h]Progress has been slow this week. The reason is I ran out of two things: resin and money in the boat fund. We set aside money each month for the boat and we had a big expense on Monday that depleted the boat fund. Mrs. Kick Back said the information on the expense is embargoed from any internet postings until tomorrow evening. So, check back then for an update.

However, we did manage to scrape together some dollars for resin mid-week, and got some time on the boat today. We closed on a condo we were selling late morning, so we didn?t get to the boat until about 3:00 PM.

A TIP:- I discovered something I can't believe didn?t hit me before. Mrs. Kick Back and I stopped at one of our salon supply stores today to pick up a few things we needed for the salon. I use our waxing sticks (popsicle type sticks) for mixing resin and applying PB for fillets, and I was almost out of them. While there, I checked the price of a gallon of acetone and it was $7.95. I?ve been paying over $16 at Home Depot. Guess where I?m going to be buying my acetone from now on. Salon supply stores that only sell to licensed hair professionals are selling at prices for salon use and for resale. Home Depot is obviously retail pricing. So, if you have a friend in the business, have them check pricing at their salon supply store. May save you some bucks.

Anyway, back to the boat. Last weekend, we put a layer of CSM and a layer of 1708 on the port side of the hull and up the sides of the port side main stringers. Today we did the same for the starboard side.

One thing that seems to take up some time each time we go to work on the boat is cleaning out the plastic resin mixing containers. Knocking out the cured resin in the bottom and peeling it off the insides takes a while to get enough clean containers for the day?s work. It also seems that after just a few uses, the plastic becomes brittle and cracks easily. I guess that?s from the heat generated by the left over curing resin. Our work was interrupted by a trip to Home Depot for rollers, roller covers, and mixing containers.

Before we wrapped up for the day, we spent some time cleaning up our work area, both in the boat and under our canopy behind it. It had become a bit sloppy and that actually costs time in the long run. Hard to find things, tripping over stuff, etc. Looks much better now.
