'82 70hp won't start after carb rebuild

I'm at my wits end with this old gal. I just finished with a complete carb and fuel pump rebuild. After I reassembled everything, I tried to start her up, but got nothing. No solenoid click even. Since all the electrical stuff was working before the carb job, I'm wondering if I could have installed something in a way that locks the motor up?

The only electrical stuff I had off were the starter and choke solenoid. Battery is new and fully charged. I even installed a new starter solenoid, but nothing.

Any ideas?

Likely suspects:

1. Fuse
2. Neutral Start switch
3. Kill switch

Go to the Engine FAQs Forum and do "Outboard won't start".

Let us know.

look for the red fuse holder on top rear of the block,thats usually wher you find it,start there,if you jump the starter with direct positive to the positive on the starter,will it crank,be careful not to start it,pull plug wires so ,if it starts without water you dont burn inpeller,i bet you have a simple problem

If you do the jumper cable bit jump both the + (to the starter) and the - (to the engine block).

The most common failure in the starter circuit is the ground cable from the battery bolted to the block.

I did try jumping the starter. It revved up, no problem. The fuse "looks" fine, but I will replace it at the first chance.

OK guys, now I'm really stumped. I replaced the fuse, still no click. I took apart the control box and checked the neutral switch and safety switch. I hot wired the neutral switch, no luck. The safety switch seems properly depressed.

I also replaced the fuse on the engine block. No luck.

There doesn't seem to be a neutral switch on the engine block ( that I can see).

At this point, I guess it must be either the wiring, the ignition switch or the solenoid. I'm not getting much help from my Clymer manual. Would a specific manual help me on this?

Any advice would be really appreciated, as I'm starting to get hard feelings toward my boat.

yes, a proper manual will be miles better for your trouble shooting, but first off, it was OK before, so you have created the problem, do not start pulling other stuff to bits, (like the control box) other wise you might end up with a whole bunch of self inflicted faults, retrace what you have done and what you could have possibly broken/dislodged or put out of place.

Great news! I bought a $3 testing light and isolated the problem to the wire between the fuse and one of the small solenoid points. It just happened to corrode through on the inside as I was working on the boat ( a week). I replaced the end and now get power to my starter and choke solenoid.

Now I am having trouble with the starter motor, but at least I can see that.
