'82 9.9 continues to run rough after carb rebuild

Per everyone's suggestion we rebuilt the carb, but the rough running, stalling, continues just as before. Carb was amazingly clean... no varnish, dirt, sludge... nothing. Pulled the fuel pump to check it out per Seloc's manual, no leak at the back vaccuum port, but as soon as the gas line from the tank was connected, fuel shot out the line that is normally hooked up to the carb... w/o cranking the engine... is this right? Where else should we look?... summer's going fast... especially here in Jackson, Wyoming at 6500'

If your tank was pressurised slightly or even if the bulb was pressurised that is likely to happen. You will be able to pump fuel freely though the fuel pump with the bulb if it is not connected to the carb.. That is what you do when you prime it anyway but it only continues until the carb bowl is full, then the float and needle valve stop it.

Cant help with the rough running. I'd be looking at the ignition system especially the plugs but since you have started a new topic I dont know what has already been suggested.

One other thing I'd check is whether the thermostat is still in working order.

I had one a little while ago that had the thermostat removed--the engine never got up to operating temp and did not want to run smooth at idle.

Did the motor come from close to sea level?

I believe we've done our best to adj. the carb properly (out 1 1/2 after seating), but I'm not sure the engine runs long enough to get to oper. temp. Once it stalls out it is very difficult, and sometimes impossible, to restart... and it's not that it just won't idle, it won't run smoothly at any speed.
I think the motor was first used in Denver... only about 1000' lower in elev.
This has been a gradual thing... 2 yrs ago it ran pretty well at first, then the roughness and stalling started, even at WOT, and just became worse until it became totally unreliable and now you can barely get off your mooring before it stalls.
Plugs are brand new. Any way to check for faulty/intermittant spark, or does that seem unlikely?
Sorry I started a new post, but my last "Reply" and additional questions on the other failed to get any responses after June 29th. Mikesea, and others, were helping us but then he seemed to disappear, must be out on his boat where he should be.

How did you get the 1 1/2 turns out? The mixture adjustment is done to get it to run right, not "x" turns. BTW, is that high speed or low speed mix you're adjusting?

If the main (high speed) is a fixed jet, has it been jetted correctly for your elevation?

Though the service manual would be a better source, I think that LeeRoy Wisner covers the subject of the tiller handle and how turning it while it is raised changes the timing. It would be worth while to scroll through the articles and get the tiller handle reset before trying to adjust anything else.

"Initial" setting is supposed to be 1 1/2 turns out after seating lightly, I've been told, and that's what the manual said, too. So that's where we started.
The high speed is fixed... is it the proper jet for this altitude??... who knows. But like I said, it's been here for years and has run fine... so I'll assume it's proper enough.
Interesting comment about the tiller and the timing... I'll check that out.
