I understand that my 82 90 hp Merc is the same powerhead that is used on other engines that are rated as high as 150 hp. What can I do if anything, to increase hp on this engine? I am hoping that by just changing the carbs I can get more power. Any insight will be greatly appreciated!

Re: 82 90 HP MERCURY

Your 90 has the same block as other inline 6 from the 70's through 1988 ranging from 90hp thru 150hp. The year of your motor is the year that Mercury changed from crankshaft hp rating to prop hp rating. Your 90hp motor is the same as a 1981 Merc 115. An 82 Merc 115 is the same as a 81 Merc 140. As I understand it, there is more than different carbs that make the different hp ratings. The intake and exhaust port size and placement is also an issue.

All in all, it's easier to just get a Merc 115 or if you can find a 115 powerhead, it's much cheeper to just replace your 90 powerhead with a 115 powerhead. That's what I did with a 115. I replaced it with a 140.

Hope this helps.

Craig
