Not sure where to go from here . . .

I picked this motor up cheap a couple weeks ago, and have gotten it running, but can't seem to get water flow. It'll idle for 3-4 minutes, then gets hot and stalls.

So, I checked the impeller. I didn't find the pin (maybe I dropped it) so replaced that. The impeller was still in like new condition. Started the motor, got flow from the telltale, then was playing with the idle setting at the front of the motor. It got hot again and died. Must have lost water flow at somepoint. So I removed the cylinder head cover, removed teh thermostat, and didn't see anything blocking flow here. Replaced the cover w/o the thermostat and started the motor. Still no flow. So I removed the outer exhaust cover. I didn't find anything restricting flow here either.
When I turned the motor over with the starter and the plug wires off, there was water flow out of two openings coming from the block. I didn't find anything foreign in here either. I replaced the cover, restarted the motor, and again, no flow.

What am I missing? The impeller on this motor has an oddly shaped cutout for the pin. Is it possible to put the impeller in upside down? Could this be my problem? If so, then why the flow with the covers off? And I'm wondering why I had the visible flow for a minute, then it stopped.

What should I try next?

Thanks for you help.

Personally, if I was having trouble with the cooling cirucuit and I had the pump apart, a new one would have gone in regardless, especially a new motor to me.

The impeller cannot go in backwards.

I would ensure the water intake is free of debris, flush the cooling circuit from the water line at the impeller housing to the t stat, then backflush from the t stat housing to the water line. Also ensure that the water line is not pinching a grommet, restricting flow.

my lower unit pushed the water tube out of the way as it slid in and drove me mad until I looked up there with a flashlight and saw it was just off center, had my son watch it as I slid it in and he had to reposition the tube to go into the pump...just a possibility

Thanks for the responses.

I was running it in a barrel.

I'm wondering what the route of the water flow is; does it come through the thermostat housing first? Or does it come out the port side of the block first and then through the thermostat?

And for what its worth, when its running, there's air coming out of the tell-tale nipple under pressure when its running/cranking, which I'm taking to mean that the pump is doing something. But if there's pressurized air, but the pump is under water, there's no where for the air to come into the water circuit is there?

Thanks,

Scott

How deep do you have it in the barrel? The pump needs to be completely submerged, it is not self priming.
