If the motor is unknown to you to this point then change the impeller at least.

The telltale first came out in 1978. Any chance the powerhead you have on your engine is an older model? It is also possible that someone changed the outer exhaust cover to an older one. You can verify the age by the model number on the round silver disc on top of the block.

I was wondering that too. The 140 first appeared in '77 (135 before that) and the diagrams do not show a telltale in '77 but they do from '78 onwards.

The exhaust cover should have the opening even if plugged. It will take the standard OMC/BRP NPT tell-tale fitting. See the bubbleback in the thumbnail.

You .... again!

Either upload a small picture directly as an attachment. See FAQs for details.

Or upload a bigger picture to a Photobucket, or similar, account then post a link to it or directly in your post using the IMG code.

If using P'buckt limit the size to what P'bucket call "large", then it fits in the forum format.

Re: 82 evinrude 140

The older exhaust covers from 1973 - 1977 135HP motors did not have the connection, but would fit the 1982 motor. There is no reason to change, because it is not the best place for a tell-tale anyway.

If you want to put one in, add it high on the engine in a manner similar to the V4 in the Engine FAQ forum: http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=222677
