Hey guys, new to posting here, need some help with my motor.

I have an 82 70hp Evinrude 3 cyl.

After running at full speed for a few minutes, it will start to sound like it is skipping, or missing. Like its dropping a cylinder. Then it starts firing good again, then it starts to do it again, and so forth.

If I keep running it like that (to get back home) by the time I get home it feels like its down to 1 cyl and will just barely idle.

I have replaced the plugs, wires, all hoses, all wiring, coil packs, checked compression (125 on all 3 cly), checked the timing, and have taken it to the Evinrude dealer and ran it with the tech in the water.

At $87 an hour it gets expensive having the tech "trouble shoot" it.

I put it back in the water today, and it ran fine for the first couple miles or so, then it started "skipping" again.

The tech and I both agree that is seems like an electrical problem and not a fuel problem.

One oddity is that with the cowling off it runs better and doesnt skip anywhere as much.

Any ideas?

Thanks,
Jerry

Did you replace the power pack? Sounds like a electical part is heating up and causing your problem, especially since it runs better with the hood off. Try putting a timing light on each cylinder while on the water so you can see which one is not getting fire.

Did you or have you ever clean you carbs out really good taking them apart and cleaning every nook and cranny out? Maybe you have a high speed jet clogged or partially clogged up causing an issue or your fuel pump might be not pumping the gas as it should at high speed. When it does this again, squeeze your primer bulb and see if it clears itself out?:)

Had the tech take a look at them, he took them apart, but didnt dig too deep into them, (at $87/hr, I just wanted his opinion) he said they looked fine, and didnt see reason t odig much deeper or intsall new "kits". The primer bulb stays firm the entire time I am running, when I squeeze it nothign happens, If I "choke" the motor it dies immediatly (like it should).

I freaking love boats....I freaking hate them too.

seems like a heat issue? when things heat up the problem is intermittant, if things stay cool the problem doesnt exist.

i had an issue similar to you and there while under power id get power then itd bog, then get power then bog..

i checked all electrical connections (sensors and everything else) then replaced my plugs/wires then lastly power pack and rectifier regulator was replaced. runs tits now.

you havent mentioned anything about the rectifier/regulator... i dunno, but it seems like you replaced everything else.
