Good morning. We are working on an 82 15 hp Johnson model number E15RCNC.
This motor has maybe up to 100 hours on it. It was left in a box for the first 35 years since 82 and never opened. Then put on a boat a few years ago. It ran well for a season, but now it will still start right up on a couple pulls and run great. However, after a run across the lake, if shut off, it will not start again. We checked when hot and it has good spark and fuel still in the carb, Plugs will get wet with continued trying to start, Installed new plugs when motor still hot and no difference, Hitting it with starting fluid will not start it or even get a cough out of it. If you let it sit for many hours until cold again or overnight, it will start again on a few pulls and run well again until you shut it off. Understanding it is almost 40 years old, the owner had new stator, pickup, power pack, coils, and plugs installed. He used CDI parts. There was no change, It will still start right up when cold, runs great until shut off, then wont start again until cold. Compression is 120 on each cylinder, Plugs are the recommended champion L77J4. Runs off a 5 gallon red plastic new tank, new fuel, new lines, tank is vented. Carb was pulled and is clean. Its not flooding over at all. If left running, it will idle, run stong, idle again, run well, but if you shut it off, it will not start.
Any thoughts on this one, All connectors are just plug in type, motor still looks new with no corrosion, it is used only in fresh water. Are there any known parts on this motor that are know to quit when they get hot? I appreciate you help. Truly baffling.

Did anyone change the waterpump after they pulled it out of the box? How are you trying to start it? If it sits for 15-20 minutes may need to use the cold start procedure.

It was pumping water, we ran it across the lake and observed it not starting after shutoff, and didn't see any signs of a poor pee stream. The owner didn't say anything about replacing the impeller, we will pull it and replace. Maybe the thermostat is sticking and running hot? but when it wont start we pulled the wires and check for spark, we have it on both cylinders. The prior shop that worked on it told him that if it was electrical, certain parts could affect others, and with everything being 40 years old, could cause issues, So he just replaced everything thinking that it would solve it. However the problem still stayed the same with no changes. I did verify the power pack and coils numbers for correct parts, i did not pull the flywheel yet to verify the stator and pickup.
Thank you again for your help and advice.

Do not know if water pump was changed, but will pull it and swap it, as prior owner didn't know. When it shuts off, and it sits for over a few minutes,, it will not start again until cold. choke, no choke, starting fluid , nothing...
thank you again for your help and advice.

Does spark jump a 7/16" gap?
Thank you for your help. We tested it when cold and It will jump well and its bright blue, but I didn't get to test the gap when it was hot, we were on the boat but it still had a good visual of a hot spark, (it's a pull start and visually looking at while hanging over the back of it with another person pulling it, it still looked good.)

Hard to believe that someone would blindly replace all those very reliable ignition parts !!----Time to do some real trouble shooting I say.

its a two stroke, i can understand if running too hot, could have fuel evaporating and boilout from heat soak, but cant understand why starting fluid wont make it even sputter when hot. as soon as its completly cold, it starts right back up . Changing the impeller and thermostat now.
i havnt taken apart the fuel pump yet, maybe a leaking diaphragm allowing too much fuel into motor though pulse hole when its shut off...... ( just thoughts)
thank you again for your help.

A blown diaphragm could flood one cyl but seems the other should fire up or at least burp with a shot of fuel or starter fluid ????? odd !!!

fuel/oil ratio is 50:1, contrary to what may be shown or heard (100:1 was discontinued if that ratio shows up somewhere). +++on impeller replacement. Test the top of the head for temp. -- too hot to touch is too hot to run. (should run at 120-140F when measured with an infrared tester. Don't assume the tank is properly venting. Try swapping out with a known good tank.

And the thing is, those parts are better quality than the stuff you can get today and will outlast anything they put on there. I wound be putting them back on. Hope the mechanic didn't keep them.

Good morning everyone, I lost internet over the weekend, but back up and online again today. We pulled the impeller and it was complete, but well curved and obviously overdue for replacement. We are working on replacing the thermostat and fuel pump now. I will update again soon.
Thank you again for everyone's help.
