I just bought a 1982 model johnson 9.9 ob. It want accelerate in neutral, it will just die. But, when after it warms for a minute, in gear it will rev up. The guy told me this was a safety for the engine. Also, any special needs for this engine?

captaintom,

The throttle will only advance so far in nuetral. That is to keep the engine from over- revving in a no load condition. It is designed that way.

As far as special needs? Who knows? How much do you know about outboards? If not much, go to the lower left corner of the header page of this forum and order a manual. It's the best $30.00 you'll ever spend.

Re: 82? johnson9.9 want rev up in neutral

Hi tom,

If you look under the "hood", you will notice a mechanical stop that prevents the "armature" plate from advancing when the engine is in neutral. This is to prevent the user from starting the motor up at full throttle and risking mechanical damage from a too high rev and no load on the motor. The stop is located on the starboard side of the engine and can be seen operating when shifting from neutral-reverse-forward gears. The part of your post that says it dies is interesting. Look on the front of the engine and there should be a "knob" marked lean-rich. With the engine warm and in gear without advancing the throttle, turn the knob a little in each direction and see if the idle picks up. Once you have got the best idle, turn the knob to the rich direction about a quarter turn. This is to prevent running the engine to lean at low speeds and causing damage to the cylinders. This should also help prevent the engine from dieing when cold.

Care of the engine should include periodic decarb, checking the lower unit lube and grease at the lube points. An owners manual would be good to have. They are still available for your engine. Keep us posted.
