Hi all,
Lookin for thoughts. Here's the backstory. I took my 1982 Johson 90hp with Jet leg into the shop to get a new impeller/liner/shaft/bearing. Costly work. Well, I expected it to be there for a week but the supplier screwed up and it ended up taking a month to get my boat back. It was a very rainy and humid month while it sat outside, and the vent was open on my gas tank.

First time out with the new impeller, I got goin and it was running beautifully at close to 5000 RPM. After 3-4 mins, the RPMs started surging up. This lasted about 5 mins, then it leveled out and ran consistent at 4400 RPM for the rest of the run, which was about 20 mins.

My guess is that I got condensation in my tank while it sat outside. It ran great at first until it used up the good fuel in the line, then surged as it started taking on the bad fuel, and leveled out with the consistent flow of bad fuel. Does it sound like I'm on the right track? Is it possible this would cause acute damage to my motor?

I always use ethanol free fuel, but I didn't have any stabilizer in it as I didn't think it would go bad in that amount of time. Maybe I was wrong?

I did add stabilizer before the run as it was going to be my last one of the season but looks like I'll be headed out one more time with new fuel and everything cleaned up.

Also, I cant find a fuel filter on this motor besides the screen on the fuel pump and whatever filter sits in my gas tank. Is it possible there isn't one?

Thanks

# 1 thing to do on a " crossflow " engine like that is a compression test.-----A water separating filter is a good item to have with any permanent fuel tank.

Yes they dont normally come with a water filter.
Swish your tank around and then put some of the fuel into a glass.
If theres water in there you will notice it layering off.
Ive fixed a motor for a mate who had it sitting in the rain and the water got in to the vent on the cap.
It wont have caused acute damage but yes youl want to run it again with proper fuel oil to ensure no moisture sits in there corroding bearings. You may even want to run it at home to get some oil in there smartly
