I dont have a lot of experience on out boards so maybee this is something simple. First of all is there a alternator in this outboard? O.k heres whats happening boat starts fine takes off fine runs fine for about 15 minutes then starts getting slugish and kind of surges gets slower and slower. then wont start. let it sit for an hour it works fine for 15. If a do a quik charge on the bateriy it will start right back up for another 15 minutes. would the batterie cause this? the fuel apears fine the plugs are fine the carbs were both rebuilt.

If you are sure it's an 82
http://www.myfishingpictures.com/watermark.php?file=527/141382_merc.jpg
It has a stator and rectifier to charge the battery and is a "Coilpack" motor. The "Bogging" could be fuel related, but it also may be overheating. How is the telltale? Water Pressure?and when was the water pump last serviced. A low battery would not likely cause this, unless it is not charging at all. Run a voltmeter across the battery while running.. Should be around 14v, if it's only 12-13, it is most likely the rectifier.

It could be an 81 but im pretty sure its an 82 I will have to look up the s/n again. I thought about it maybe overheating as well but the telltale and prussure seems good. I am not sure the last time the pump was serviced so maybe i will look into that. I will run a voltage check tonight, Thanks. Where is the rectifier located?

81-82- No real difference except cowling paint. The rectifier is a small box with 2 or 3 terminals and is located on the Starboard side of the motort above the switchbox. Easy to test and replace. Not real cheap though.

O.k went out today to start it up no go battery was at about 11.2VDC switched with new battery which was 12.3VDC started right up checked the voltage across the baterie still 12.3 VDC. If it is the rectifier will the engine still run if the battery is disconneted? Is there another check to make sure it is the rectifier? Once again thanks.

I'm fairly sure you have blown your rectifier. Do not run the motor without the battery hooked up. To verify, use your manual for instructions as to how to check the rectifier.

Sounds good I will order a rectifier. I am not sure how long its been since the water pump has been worked on I have only had this outboard for about a month. How much water should be comeing out of the telltale? I have a pretty steady stream that sputters every once in a while. How fast should it be comeing out?
