82 searay transom& enginebed replacment

I am atempting to replace the transom core, enginebed and inboard and outboard stringers, up to the first bulkhead in a 82 searay 225 expres cruiser. I have removed the stringers I am starting to remove the transom core, but the engine bed seems to be attached to the transom. I am looking for some advice on what materials to use in reconstructing the engine bed. here are some pics of work done so far.

pics didn't take. you can up load to a free service like photobucket.com then you choose the pictures you want( clik the little box at the bottom left of the picture) scrool to the bottom of the page, clik generate html, it will take you to the next page, scroll down to thumb nails clik on that and copy, then insert it into your post.

also if you are planing on posting pictures, you can use the Blue post reply or the go advanced, manage attachments, there you can upload , directly from your computer. besure you pictures have been resized to fit the format. 640x480 max.

don if you can get picks that would be great.....

but is this just a regular stringer replacement??

if it is......take lots of picks of the origonal set....diagrams and mesurements.

yes the engine bed is attached to the transom.....it kinda locks the transom in place.......

pressure treated plywood is the material of choice for strings and tran...two peices laminated togeather with fiberglass........

im not framilliar with your vessel.....

but....if you hit search...on this forum....look up skankie beast....its a stringer floor trans refit that is very well layed out as a teaching tool.....it will help loads.......

i just searched your boat on sea rays home page.....in doin a 69 srv190/.....

look at the "hull extension in progress" link and see if the motor bed is the same ...it should be....if it is....its easy......its getting that transom out thats gonna be hard.....i have the benefit of taking my deck off....

i hope youve pulled the motor.....

OK I am still working on resizing the pics. last weekend I just went at it and finished cutting out the transom it was so dryrottted it just fell to pices when I removed the inner skin. I also cut out the engine bed your right it was easy no problem now its time to rebuild some parts and make some templates, and yes the engine is removed, but I have enough room under the rear deck that reomval of the deck is not nessary. you said p/t is the way to go. I have heard that it is hard to get a good bond is this true. Here are some pics

capt....it looks like your doin fine......

did you take mesurements of the old stringer system and lay out?...ie height. legnth?

i have mine if you need...it might be a little different as i think your beam is wider...im 7 feet.

go buy your plywood now....and keep it in a warm dry place...it needs to be DRY or the resin wont stick......it will be wet when it comes from the store...i dont care how dry it looks. if you have a fan...use it on the plywood...

after the demolition....you will need to bring out the grinder....and clean off anything that might be dirty. if there is any resin without glass in the bilge. or around the stringer placements. it has to come out....

resin by it self is weak...very weak....

after grinding....use a rag soaked with acetone and clean every inch of the area..........after the acetone flashes off....climb in there and have a close look....really close look...see any spots you missed?

next rough and scuff the transom area. claen with acetone..

that will hold you for now.....also read erikgreen's thread ...hes doin a super job on his sea ray....it is close to the same size of yours.....

after thats all done ...pm me and we'll walk you thru building the new transom and installing it......
do the transome before you do the strings and the engine bed....

Hey guys I am ready to order fiberglass but I need to know what to order and how much. I will be useing polyester resin. The engine bed was verry thick about .25-.50 inch thick.

good question capt.

that depends on many factors....

minimum 5 gals of resin. and glass bubbles for cabosil. (peanut butter(you can use whatever type of product you want for cabosil, but it must be included in the product purchase.)

if you get it from a local wholesaler...you might be able to return any unused portions for a refund....

you will need 2 types of fiberglass. csm...or chopped strand matt. and a cloth type product (commonly called roving )

a minimum of 50 feet of each...as your boat is 22 feet? so the longest string is what 15 feet?

each stringer needs to be covered with two layers of matt and one layer of cloth...(matt gainst the hull/stringer, cloth.then matt.each layer overlaping the last) three layers would be minimum for a thinner type of product....

best thing to do is get out the measuring tape and start calculating..

the thicker the product the more resin it uses, but the less layups you have to do)
the thinner the product the less resin, but more layups......

dont forget acitone.
erikg had mentioned about buying glass scraps of e-bay cheep!

if you can find a local supplier, you'll save yourself some gray hairs over the measurements and calculations. none of it is particularly cheap so you don't want to overbuy but shipping isn't free either so if you're getting it shipped don't cut it too short....fun stuff.

oops might know your boat better but 5 gallons didn't get me anywhere. i'm working on a 23' inboard, our boats should be fairly similar in quantities. so, just for ball-park's sake i made yet another run for poly resin...my 4th- 5 gallons o'fun. and, i didn't have a transom to do but i did have some low spots i've filled-in to aid drainage into my bilge.

uscomposites dot com is a popular online retailer but i'm sure there are more. they're fairly helpful but they'll need to know how much you need.

you'll need mat for the stringers and deck
heavier roven for the stringers
cloth for the deck
tools (brushes, rollers, measuring cups, stirrers... they have a very handy measuring dispenser for the hardener...don't forget one, no more counting drops!)
foam (there's some thrilling reading if you search)
cabosil, microbubbles, and/or chopped strands to thicken the poly

i'd tell you exact amounts but i haven't wrapped it all up yet. at 30 yards of 1.5 oz (50" wide) mat, i think i'm close but might need more. i got 25 yards of 24 oz roven (50" wide) and think i'll have a bit leftover. i can't remember how much cloth i got, haven't started with it yet.

oops said this on another thread, if you can buy it in smaller quantities your wallet won't notice it as much...so true.

last thing, mat is very thirsty stuff. i looked at the lady like she was crazy when she said 5 gal of poly would saturate 10 yards of mat properly. she gave me a nice smile when i came back 4 days later for another 5 gal.

Ok let me clarify the situation. I am replacing the transom engine bed and onily the stringers in the engine compartment up to the first bulkhead. The transom rotted becouse when searay built the boat 26 yrs ago they did not compleatly glass the top of the transom and water draining down the gunnels got in and saturated it. The stringers werw rotted where they meet the transom and forward about a foot, same thing with the engine bed. The rest of this is in exclent shape, no wet foam!!!! So with only 4 stringers being about 5 ft long. the engine bed laminat is extreamily thick so should I use the thichest mat csr that I can get or should I use many layers to build it up. Also the stringers are coverd buy a shelf and the voids filled with foam when searay built they only tabed the stringers to the transom and stapled the inboard stringer to a block that was attached to the bulkhead. As for the outboard stringer they did the same thing at the transom anb it is stapled to the end of the bulkhead I am not sure what happens after that for that is as far as I am going. My plan was to tab the new stringers to the transom and the hull conecting the inboard stringer to the bulkhead in the same manor, and using a splice on the outboard stringers, also tabing them to the transom and hull

You're in good hands with oops, and I'll try to get on and comment when I get home in a couple days.

The engine mounts need to be full of wood, as the lag is 4" or so?
It needs a good bite.

Ok so I have been grinding for 3 weeks about 2 hrs at a time on the weekends and I am about to finish the grinding today. I am on my second grinder, the first one fell victim to the dust I have decided to cover this one with some kneehigh nylons, let me tell you this works great. Here are some pics.
